Raising from Button or Late

Posted Fri Feb 17, 2006 5:34 pm GMT by Ciso_B
I play a pretty agressive game in the mtts i play, usually play alot of stuff from late. When I used to see a hand like A 9 or KJs or something marginal like that in late, and i d do my normal raise sometimes u get re raised and have to fold. But my point is , is it really better to have a hand that looks ok like KQ ,A 10 etc or a random hand when you are in late?
If you get any action or resistance you are probably behind anyway, then when you flop something like top pair you think you are prolly ahead which is not necessarily the case.Plus if you get played back at when you have trash you can easily throw your hand away. So in that aspect , the junk hand is easier to play imo.

My point is , when you are in late does it really matter if you get marginal or a trashy hand , would you play it the same or do you have certain criteria of hands to play in late?

It really doesn't matter. Of course you'd like a better hand but the majority of the time the hand will play out the same.

You raise.
Get Called.

Flop X X X

Player Checks
You Bet

After that it depends on if you actually hit.

makes sense to me....i've been raising w/ middle suited connectors more lately...also tho, if you get a call when you raise w/ Ax, they could easily call w/ a little pp or JTs, or just 2 cards w/ paint....so i suppose its pretty hit and miss...i guess wut i'm saying is that ppl should raise in late position more Smile

I play mostly shorthanded no limit, so my views are coloured by this.

I'll raise alot of junk from the button, because I'll know if my hand is good or not on the flop most of the time, or if I can bluff it. If I have weak players to my right I'll also raise alot of hands from the CO and maybe earlier, so I can buy myself position.

At the low stakes I play, people also tend to not notice the difference in position play, so I'll get alot more action on the hands I play from earlier positions.

My view is that playing junk is usually not dangerous as long as I'm the aggressor. In late position you'll usually get to be the aggressor if it has folded or limped to you.

I would think the stage of the tourney (blinds also play into this) and the size of the table along with the table makeup would determine the answer to this question.

Early in the tourney I might raise on occasion with maginal hands late, but not as often as I would later in the tourney when the blinds are worth taking down, the risk isnt' worth it.

As for which hand you'd prefer to get, I think you'd want the marginally good hand, not the trash hand. Think of the marginally good hands as semi bluffs, the trash hands are pure bluffs. Call with the trash hands, raise with the marginal hands with some mixing it up thrown in, at least early in the tourney.

The odds of your flopping a monster with a crap hand and a good hand are obvious, busting someone with a trash hand requires them often to be slow playing a big hand, something your not as apt to see combined with lucky flop.

If you are reraised, it makes no difference whether you hold Q9s or junk becuase you are done with the hand anyway.

The only difference is when the blind only calls. At least with "half a hand" (56s for instance), you have a chance to flop something good. That is why I like to have a little something when making a late position raise.

RR.
