Hi there,
Myself and 3 other buddies have taking the plundge and decided to start holding our own freeze out style poker events in our local hotel.
There is a big market for this kind of structure over here in ireland and we thought we'd give it a go and be the first in our town to try it out.
However, apart from having sufficient chips, table, cards etc... I would like to know what else we could do to improve? Our first tournament is next month and we've posters and adverstising taken care of.
Any info would be great. If anyone knows any sites (apart from homepokertourney.com) :D that would be helpfull, then that would be cool as well.
Kind Regards,
Carlo
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

Well, the big thing I can think of, is pick good rules and enforce them with an iron fist. Real poker players want a smoothly run tournament above all, I think.

Make sure all rules are published beforehand and readily available if asked for. This should outline very touchy stuff like swearing, check-raising, etc.

Get a projector and a laptop so you can run Tournament Director or software of your choice so the blinds, payouts, chip denoms, etc. are taken care of for you.

We have a list of rules on this site:

I hope that helps.

I've always heard that check-raising is frowned upon in some games. I always thought it to be an essential part of one's strategy.

Some of this is probably bloomin obvious but hey-ho.
Pay careful attention to your start time. Too early or too late will cost you players. Also, take a fair while picking the correct days according to what else is on locally.
Make sure everyone on your staff is on the same page with regard to the rules and rulings. Post them scenario type questions till they all get it right. An inconsistent ruling is worse than a bad ruling.
Lay on a buffet for the players at the first break :D
Know all your customers names.
Don't charge greater than 7% juice.
Ensure you have adequate waiting staff attend to players. Have them ask each player individually if they want a drink, rather than just asking the table generally. I'm guessing the bar will make you a fair amount of money in Ireland.
There's a fine line to be drawn between experimenting with different structures and buy-ins and keeping things consistent. Go with your instincts I say.
Good Luck
