I know the general rule is winner will be decided by the best 5 cards... based on that the best kicker will win the pot, but for some reason it sounds a little bit weird to me.
If the board is
A A A A 2
then someone who holds a K will claim the pot? Please confirm.

The kicker plays. Not sure why that seems weird, but thats how it is. Best 5 card hand, 4 A's and the next highest card.
If the board reads AAAAK, split it up.
If the board reads AAAA2, and you have a high card 8 in your hand, and the villain has a high card 5, high card 8 takes the pot.
