I have a bankroll question |

Right now Im a low limit player but I clean up everytime I hit the casino. I normally play at Commerce Casino in LA so there is a mix of regulars and new fish. Ive gotten to know most of the regulars and know when Im beat and when Im not. So I know my bankroll doesnt have to be that high there. But Im wanting to step it up and start playing medium level games, 6/12 and up. I just have no idea what an appropriate bankroll would be heading into a game like this. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

No less than $2000, probably more to be safe.

Really that high? I usually bring 10x the small blind and that has been working so far. So I was think 6 to 8 hundred.

i assume you meant 100x the small blind, or 50x the big blind....that is fine to sit down w/ to play at the table...but you hafta expect to get some variance along the way....so you dont want to step up to the next higher limit, take a small but significant loss and drop back down....I would suggest moving up in limits as slowly as possible...that way you can be sure and comfortable...and if you can make that much in the lower limits, then you can be confident that you are ready to move up...also, optimally whenever you sit down you should buyin for the max buyin just to show ppl yer there to play....so assuming 1200 is the max buyin for the 6/12 game....dropping to 800 seems a reasonable stopping level....so if you do that twice, and are still able to buy back in, that means you stepped up w/ 2k...so, xDiamond_CutteRx's suggestion seems reasonable to me....if not come in w/ more....if the lower limits are going so nicely, it shouldn't be that troublesome to wait

Yess, sorry I ment 100x the small blind.
My problem with the lower limits, as you already know, its impossible to raise anyone out of a hand and the bad beats are starting to get me. I havent taken a loss in months. I know I can be thankful for a good streak of luck. I just want to maximize the luck and try and get rid of people who cap the pot blind. On the low limits at Commerce people just do not value thier money and are there for entertainment only.

I once took a bad beat at the 2/4 table and complained that I was gonna not play again until I had enough money to play higher limits were the players were better and another player just told me " You can move up if you want but up there, there are just as many bad players. They just have more money than these." In other words if you cant win at low levels moving up won't help.

The only difference that I noticed a change between was 5-10 and 10-20. At 5-10 you still get a high % of callers that really shouldn't be in the hand. At 10-20 I noticed that although it would happen occasionally, it was nowhere near at the same level of the 5-10 and lower tables.

This sounds like a question about your buy-in for a particular session, and not your bankroll, which would be all of your available poker money regardless of whether it's in play on a given night.
For a bankroll, I've been playing 6/12 with between 2500 and 3000, or between 200 and 250 big bets. In any given session, I'll buy in for 25 big bets, or $300. I rarely take more than one buy-in with me since if I lose that much, I'm probably not playing particularly well and that's my safety net to keep me from dropping more.

Hey, I frequent Commerce a lot too. Are you only playing limit games, or no-limit as well. I have noticed that although the $100 NL is very, very easy, there is a very large increase in skill at the $200 NL, so even though me and my friend always do well at the $100 NL and have made enough to support playing $200 NL, we just stay at $100 NL because it is so much easier.

I think Matt touches on a good point. If one "cleans up every time", why would one change their game?
I mean, I can see if you wanted to try a new level out to see if you clean up there too, but you should be able to buy-in for the amount (relative to the blinds) at the next level up and see how it goes.
After all, even if it wipes out your stack, you have the security of the lower-limit game to go back to, where you can't lose.
