I need live game advice

Posted Thu Mar 02, 2006 1:50 pm GMT by WD-40
Ok, going to Tunica this weekend. I usually just play blackjack and craps, never really played a cash game. Played a couple of live tounaments, but thats about it. I play a lot on-line though. (I know its not the same)

I'd like to find a $1/$2 NL game....do they even have them at that low a level?

I'd say I'm a pretty tight player, good patients. When I get a good hand or the nuts, I'll bet pretty aggresive.

Just wondering if any of you have any advice for a B&M newcomer?

I've watched them play, and they had huge stacks, and betting a lot of $$. I think that was a $2/$5 game.

Any advice would be appreciated!!

I'd suggest buying into a 3/6 limit game for $100 and work out any bugs in your "mechanics" before jumping into a live NL game. When I say mechanics I mean playing in turn, making a call with the correct amount of chips, nervous hands that kind of stuff you don't deal with on-line.

I'd expect to buy into a 1/2 NL game for $300 and at least $500 on the 2/5 NL game. Once you get your mechanics worked out, you can concentrate on your table image and player reads. You don't want to look like a rookie or make rookie mistakes at the NL game. You won't last long....

Note: I am mainly a live limit player.

Good luck!

I agree; start playing limit.

Many NL games outside of Nevada have a 50 BB max buy-in (ie $100 for a 1/2 NL game), but in Tunica the max buy-in may be the standard $200 or possibly even higher depending on the structure.

I've seen a lot of odd structures... at one game near Sacramento, there's 2/5 blinds, and only a max $200 buy-in! At the El Dorado in Reno, there's $2/$3/$5 blinds, $10 to stay in pre-flop, with a max buy-in of $1000 on most nights, but on the weekends, you can bring as much live cash to the table as you want.

I know that what they've said is probably sound advice, but if you've not played limit, don't start there in a casino. Trust me. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. I hated it!! In fact, if it hadn't been for a great deal of coersion from the hubby, I'd have never sat at a poker table in a casino again. It was the worst experience of my life.

Sit at a $1/2 NL game and just play patiently. I will tell you to be prepared for large preflop raises (standard was $15-25 at the first NL table I played) and get to know your opponents and how they're playing. I folded for the first two orbits at my first game so I could get a feel for the players. Then I walked away with almost $1K profit.

Be patient. If you're getting bad reads or a player is sending you on tilt, request a table change. Make sure you eat and don't get too drunk. Try not to be intimidated. Just play like you would at a regular home game or online. However, don't jump up and down if you hit a royal like you would at home. Laughing

Good luck I hope it works out well for you.

The only way to know if your comfortable with live play is to go for it. It doesn't sould like you are ready for NL b/c if you sit and wait until you have monsters, no ones gonna play with you. They do have low limits but you dont get players like you at those limits. I would try a 3-6 or 4-8 limit or even a higher limit with a minimal buy in.

Au contraire, mon ami. In cash games, you can be as patient as you can stand to be. I'm a very patient player. I don't always wait for AA to play, but I don't play every hand I'm dealt either. I've been paid nicely every time I've been to a casino.

I dont know if you will see this or not being that the original post was 3 weeks ago but here it goes..... I didnt mean that he should not play NL b/c he waits for big hands but b/c if you are not comfortable acting like you have a monster when really you have 27o PF. If you only wait for good hands and play nothing inbetween than no one will call a raise from you PF if you only play every 10-15 hands!!!

This has not been my experience to date. I understand your point and you may be right in some instances, but I have not had this happen yet.

The last time I played in a casino, I probably played 1-2 hands every round or two. I still got plenty of action when I raised. I think you're giving more credit than is due to players that play at lower limit NL. Of course it all depends on the table you're playing and what your image is.

I had a couple of guys who wouldn't even think of calling a preflop raise from me, but I had the others who were just dying to get a piece of my stack. Those were the guys that rewarded my patience. If you're sitting in the middle of a rock garden, you won't get action with big raises. A few action players at the table, however, will change this dramatically. Besides, there is usually one or two at the table who really, really, really want to crack your big hand(s) with junk.

I guess it all depends on your opponents.

As in in live in (bloody) Norway, I don't have casino experience, but I've tried my luck in alot of asorted homegames. Bad loose players don't usually mind jumping into a pot with you even if you play tighter than a granite rock. These guys don't see it like that, they want in on the action. Folding is often seen as 'cowardly' and a raise means action and action is good. And if they put money into the pot allready...well...they aren't giving them away for nothing by _folding_ Smile

So I wouldn't be surprised if you can play really tight in a live casino game and get away with it.

Apart from that I'd probably jump into big pots with cards that are connected or suited when in position. Big pots are good.
