I was reading about some guy who phsyced himself up before playing poker and most times he would win.
He reckoned that deliberately working himself up in to a positive state of mind made a huge difference to his performance at the poker table.
I'm slightly sceptical on this but maybe he's got a point.
Sometimes I'm in a pretty negative state of mind and, thinking about it, I generally don't do too well when I'm feeling like that.
So has this guy got a point? Does a positive state of mind give you the edge you sometimes need at the poker table?
Anyone got any thoughts on this?

I'd say if you have a good attitude and a clear state of mind, you're more liable to make better decisions, and that will increase your overall expectation. I don't think it's anything mystical... just good state of mind while playing solid Poker.

Confidence goes a long way in any competitive endeavor... and a positive state of mind tends to go a long way in just about anything.
I don't think that confidence, in itself, is going to magically make you the best player at the table... but being confident in your game, and being in that positive state of mind (playing for 'good' reasons, not 'bad' ones) probably, at least for me, have a similar effect on my game as being focused, being alert, etc. etc. It's a surprisingly big deal.
I think the overwhelming majority of poker players would be absolutely SHOCKED at how much their decision making varies from time to time, based on all sorts of internal factors. If you don't believe me, stay up for 36 hours, drink a few beers, and start conjuring up the image of your favorite little kitten from your childhood getting run over, by you. Then play a bit. Log the session, and look back the next day. You'll believe me then.
Things like confidence, a clear head, and everything else, are going to help you make decisions to the best of your ability. Put your left foot in, out, shake it about, because really, that IS what it's all about.

Tony Robbins says if you want to perform at a peak level, you need to be in a peak state.
Makes sense to me.

Confidence is necessary (well, as with anything mental in poker) only to the extent that it may or may not change your decisions. If you're capable of making the right decision REGARDLESS of how you feel, then it hardly matters what mood your kitten is putting you in. Can people do this? Maybe.

well look at what positive thinking did for Cindy Violette at the WSOP
it is quite surprising what it can do to you,
but lik eits been said dont think it will make you Phil Ivey skill wise,
but in better shame u are mentally and emotionally closer to your potential u will preform, and that goes for everything not just poker

You hold A K , raise and get two callers:
The flop comes
Q J 2
You think one of these:
1.) Damn! That's an ugly flop!
2.) Wohoo! That's a good flop!
3.) Do I have a straight now?!
If you answer 1 you might be too negative, if you answer two your positive mindset will ensure you a WSOP seat and if you answer three you are such a positive person that anybody here will gladly welcome you to their tables.
