I noticed a lot of the players had stacks of cash ($100 bill) under their chips. What is the purpose of this?
That money is in play along with their chips right? So if you want to play with that much, why not get 5 or 6 $100 chips to go along with all the $1 and $5 chips?
Just wondering...I did see a couple of guys throw a big raise out there with their "paper" money. Is this just some type of intimidation thing?

When I had cash on the table in Vegas it is when you buy in for $400 or so, drop $250 and want to make sure you have enough if you get into a big hand. Instead of buying chips that you may or may not need, just throw the cash up there.
Also, depending on the casino, often just $100s play, not smaller.
Most casinos I have played outside Vegas, cash does not play.

On occasion, I've sold chips to a player when the dealer was short and still waiting for a fill. It's table stakes, so you can't put the cash in your pocket.

lol that reminds me of POker Den... anyone seen that show? they play with bricks of money, i personally dont like that show that much but its just funny sometimes. I imagine the dealer must be fed up with counting all those bills

Well, there is a certain nostalgic charm to having cash at the table for my part. I remember my old games, filled weird houserules and with bills, coins & IOUs and 'off calls' (basically calling beyond what money you had at the table, but ofcourse, only well-known regulars oldtimers known to pay up were allowed this prestigious move, it was named thus because you tossed a single coin to the side of the pot and proclaimed a 'off call').
But ofcourse, chips & table stakes are somewhat more handy.

also, when you play cash you're not obligated to fill out a cash transaction report (CTR).
this is usually for higher limit games (10-25+NL and 100-200+ limit)

Though I'm fairly unfamiliar to B&M games (and have rarely played in a game where cash played like that, so I don't know how much of a role what Howzit mentioned comes into play... it could be quite significant) I think it mostly is just convenience like Dave said. When I went to Canterbury (Dave's haunt, for those that may not know) and donked it up at the $4/$8 game, they only played with blue ($1) chips there. The absolute smallest amount of money I want on the table at a $4/$8 game is ~$100, so I tend to like to have a significant amount more than that available. When the alternative is to deal with 3, 4, 5 racks of chips, it becomes a lot easier to just throw some cash on the table.

If I put a player all in does the cash also count toward his all in or just his chips?

If he has cash out on the table prior to the deal and it is a casino where cash plays, then that counts vs his total chip count.

Personally, I do it because I am a supersticious freak. Lets say I am playing 20/40 and I buy in with say 1000 in chips. I ABSOLUTELY must have a 100 dollar bill under the chips otherwise I don't feel right. It doesn't matter the stakes or my chip stack, I have to have it there. Along with a certain kind of eye drops. And certain other effects in specific pockets. I am wierd.
