Just for fun

Say you are sitting at a table for 5 hours playing poker...live or online..doesn't matter...you chose, same goes for NL and FL...you chose the setting if you think it matters.

On the same table the three following players are also seated:

1. A very skilled player who has played for years and knows most there is to know about poker theory.
2. A player who plays poker for one of his first times.
3. A player who has read a bad poker book briefly.

Just for fun, what impression do you think those players would have of you after having played with you for those 5 hours?

Player 1 would almost certainly realize that I'm a thinking player. He'd probably give me at least some respect for being dangerous, and probably rate me higher than the other two players, at least. Farther than that though, it's hard to tell if he'd think I was a)a complete shark, b)a mediocre/decent player, or c)too reckless and tricky for my own good. Much of this depends on how well I'm actually playing, what situations he's got to see me in so far, etc. etc.

Player 2 would probably peg me as a complete genius if I was running goot, and a moron if I was running bad.

Player 3 would presumably think that I'm absolutely awful.

1) Would respect me for being a thinking player and might consider me dangerous because of this...you know what they say...a little knowledge is a dangerous weapon in the wrong hands... Laughing.

2) Would wonder how I get so darn lucky.

3) Would most likely be thinking they read the wrong book or that I should write a book on poker... Laughing

Probably the same, although in my case most likely between b) and c). He'd be concerned about me, but also fairly certain I can be beaten. I usually have the same impression of the good players with whom I play.

Again, the same, but I'm also the chatty one at the table. The first-timers usually like me because I'm the helpful sort.

Player 1: "Dude, she's hot and she knows how to play."
Player 2: "Dude, she's hot and she has money."
Player 3: "Dude, she's hot, has money and is really friendly."

Laughing Just joking.

Player 1 would think I was a TAGGy player and either try to outplay me or stay out of my way when I was in a pot. He may also use false tells when he figures out that most of my play is based on my reads and intuition.

Player 2 would figure that I don't have a clue since most girls, especially any that are halfway decent-looking, are dumb and, since I'm drinking while playing, I must be really dumb. So after a few hours would figure I'm incredibly lucky or that the player 1 folds to my bets a lot because he's trying to be nice and take it easy on the chick.

Player 3 would think that I'd read a book or two mostly dealing with tells as I have a tendency to call a player on their hand and I'm right a good deal of the time. I figure he would try to "outbet" me most of the time.

1. Prolly thinks I'm laggy and beatable, and a typical cocky college-aged player.
2. Prolly thinks I'm a gambler.
3. Prolly thinks I'm very loose and very lucky.

They'd all respect me for being the best player in the world and if they didn't I'd berate their bad play 'til they did.

1. Thinks he can buy pots from me and I don't bluff
2. Thinks I got it when I bet
3. Is already friendly with me and thinks I'm a good guy because I keep reinforcing his bad habits. He also thinks I'm ready to gamble a lot becaues I keep getting involved with him in pots.

1. Thinks I'm a fish.
2. Thinks I'm a fish.
3. Thinks I'm a fish.

They'd be right! Embarassed

1. Thinks I'm too loose preflop and sometimes too loose passive on flop but dangerous in general, and prefers to avoid me with these two other idiots at the table.

2. Thinks I'm awesome.

3. Thinks I suck.

They would all think I'm a fish, and they'd probably be right...

Seriously though, hmmm...

1. Would probably tag me as a tight-aggressive player who is decent but not a genius by any means. He'd probably see me as uncreative (assuming this is a cash game) but who understands the basic mechanics of the game very well.

2. Would probably see me as a player he wants to avoid playing pots against, because when I'm in a hand, I bet a lot, and when I show down, I usually have the goods.

3. Would think I either have a perfect understanding of the way he thinks the game should be played, or would think I'm an absolute maniac depending what I had won pots with.

Maybe I'm being a little too optimistic, but here goes:

Player #1: Would think that I was a decent, solid player (I hope). He would know that I probably stay out of his way unless I have the goods, which he would probably profit from.

Player #2: Wouldn't respect any raises from me and would be thrilled at how often he caught his miracle card on the river against me. Would be clueless to how much or little poker knowledge I possessed. Would probably end up busting me.

Player #3: Probably the only opponent at the table that might "look up to me" a bit. Would most likely respect raises from me. I would probably be able to make the most money off of this guy.

I always thought it stood for "Tight and Aggressive" and "Loose and Aggressive".

EDIT: I realised that doesn't make any any sense. Confused Someone else must know.

Tight AGgressive

Loose AGgressive

At least, that's how it works in my head. I'm usually wrong. Especially since "LAP" means "Loose Passive," so who knows.

anybody know the etymology?....hehe....is this from a poker book or that dag gone ol' internets thinger majigger?

Posted Wed Mar 08, 2006 6:06 pm GMT by suitedaces84
There's nothing official about any of these definitions but the 'G' refers to good--as in, plays reasonably postflop. Alternative third letters include 'W' and 'C' which refer to weak (folds too much) and calls (calls too much).
