45 person SnG just started. This is the fifth hand. I made a continuation bet on the flop in an attempt to steal the pot. Was that a good move? And, also, what should I do here on the turn?

The bet on the flop was fine. Continuation betting is a must. Villain calls, and you don't improve on the turn...time to slow down, methinks.

yup slow it down beauty of AK is it's not nearly as hard to lay down as a made hand like AA or KK time to cut your losses I try not to fall in love with it
although it looks so beautiful suited

The way this betting has gone, I would slow down as zinn said.
I do have a suggestion though. When I make a continuation bet, it is rarely the pot. It is usually 1/2 to 2/3 the pot for two reasons:
1) A smaller continuation bet of 1/2-2/3 accomplishes pretty much the same thing as a pot sized bet. You likely are only getting called by hands that beat you, drawing hands, or people trying to steal on later streets. You would also get villains folding just the same with a smaller bet if they missed.
2) Smaller continuation bets allow for you to make one more stab at the pot on the Turn to see if you can get Villain to fold. If he calls on the flop, you could essentially make one more probe bet on the Turn that might get Villain to fold. You never know when Villain is just calling the turn to see if you slow down on later streets and pounces on the weakness. A probe bet on the turn slows this type of player down.
If you take this line, you can make 2 bets for right around the same amount you made the first one.
Just my $.02

Good stuff...I didn't even realize how much he bet on the flop. As DAt stated, 1/2-2/3 continuation bet will give you most of the info you need.

Opponent raises 60 chips to 80, You call 80, the BB calls.
Flop is 5s Qc 5h
Pot is 250, PFR bets ~240, you call, other opponent folds.
Do you ever have worse than AK here, and do you ever plan on folding a hand that is better than AK?

Yep. This is SOP for me. I win far more hands without ever reaching the river.

Okay, great. Thanks for the advice on the hand and on continuation bets in general.

Dat I am shocked at you as well my friend.... :D. You missed that small pre-flop raise with a premium hand. It is typical of Zinno not to catch it... . Sometimes I think that young lad is a real blond male... .
With premium hands you need to make players pay the premium price to even get to see a flop. 4-5xBB is usually the best pre-flop raise with these hands. If they fold then you collect blinds. If they play chances are you collect a good pot if you play it right.
After the flop, as Dat said a 1/2-3/4 pot size bet is sufficient to gather all information you need as to where you stand now. Personally I would be a little weary after letting both these guys in so cheaply. They could have a good hand while your trying to decide where you stand. |
erm... a min preflop raise? He raised it to 4xBB which a pretty standard preflop raise.

I say we should all chip in a few bucks and send UrAteUp to a basic reading and comprehension class.

I'd put $5 towards this cause, but for some reason I think he would put it in his poker account so he could sit at a table and berate people for not raising enough preflop with premium hands!
BTW, isnt the funniest Emoticon of all time?

I have to concur with Dat on this one. Not about UreAteUp putting the funds into his poker account, but on the original post.
As the hand was played, I have to agree with snoogs (as usual). A smooth call to a pot-sized bet on the flop is a pretty sure sign that you're beaten.

Reading glasses might help.... ...remember I am probably the oldest person posting on this forum... . So youngins show some respect to your elders when we make a mistake....

Change the resolution on your screen, pops. That may help too. Bigger words.

I was just trying to help you out old timer. This 'misreading' is
becoming more and more frequent. Better get it fixed now
before you accidentally mistake ducks for rockets next time
you are at the table.

No offense intended UAU. I was just giving you a hard time. The pops comment just sort of typed itself. I play with an older man who goes by "Pops" so it just kind of subconsciously pushed it's way in there.

Actually, according to DaveB, I'm an old hag.
