Bubble play.

In a 9 player sng on stars we got down to the last 4, with me and 2 other guys about level in chips and the fourth guy low stacked (with about 900).
Blinds were 50/100 I think? Anyhow, they were still pretty low because of all the daft play that had gone on earlier.
Anyway, this guy simply sat there being blinded down and down until he had about 300 chips left. Then he moved all in with something like Q 9, got called and was out.

Presumably he was either waiting for a good hand which never came, else he was maybe hoping that 2 of us might get involved in a big hand and 1 of us would go out.
I've actually benefited from the second scenario myself: Your short stacked of the final 4 and thinking your gonna bubble out when suddenly...bang! A huge hand develops between 2 of the other players and, impossibly, your in the money! :D

So I was just wondering how often the low stack of the final 4 would get in to the money if he just sat there basically folding?

Well, you've gotta figure he has at least four circuits before he is blinded out and you never know when pocket kings or gonna go up against aces or something like that. I would probably look for an Ace/high kicker combo or high pocket pair before even thinking about moving into the pot.

That being said, if it is folded around to me on the blinds or "in the blinds", and I have any decent holding, I would be willing to push in an attempt to steal. I have actually gotten very good at playing the short stack because my concervative play style usually puts me in that position at the final table.

What soup said. I want to add that if you're more aggressive, you can double up or steal a bunch of blinds and place higher then 3rd place. Is 3rd place really what you want?

It really depends on the table and your opponents, as in all situations in poker. If they are a loose bunch and will call you with any ace or king, then you're forced to wait for a good hand and hope one busts, aren't you? If they're tight, then it's in your interest to try to steal the blinds and move up in the money instead of trying to squeeze in.

Way too many people fall into believing that there's a perfect way to play poker (and that benefits the ones who don't very well). There isn't.

Play the oponent, not the cards right? Learn how to do everything and know when is the time to do them. And this isn't rock/paper/scissors type of game...you can play loose against a loose player, just a different shade of looseness. There are many many styles of play and if you can recognize them on people after a few hands and can play well against that style, you'll take their money in the long run.

Was that guy correct to get blinded down like that? Maybe and maybe not; were his oponents overly loose and agressive? Did he get 27 off 10 times in a row and really couldn't do anything about it? It's all shades of grey.Your intuition is your most powerful decision making tool.

best time to attack in sng is when ur SS... attack attack attack... odds are even with hands like Q7 u are bound to win 30% of the time... decent odds if u double up ur in good shape if not better luck next time

Sitting there like a nit is not a longterm winning strategy (see Snoog's article). I never play just to make the money... if I go broke, I go broke, but I want to maximize my chances of winning.
