such a bad beat for a qualifer!

so im playing on CDPoker, they have this qualifier for their main event where its a $500,000 pool.

The tournament starts with 400+ people, each with 1500 in chips. Top 5 get tokens into the main event

After about 2 hours of play, im doing quite well and in 6th place in chips in the tourny, with about 25,000 and only 41 players left.

I get J Heart Q Heart as my hole cards and im fairly interested. Blinds are 300/600

Short stack raises to 1200, myself and the guy 2nd in chips in the tourny calls.

Guy 2nd in chips is the button. Flop comes J Spade Q Spade 8 Heart

Im thinkin I gotta be good. Short stack is first to act and raises about 1200, I put him all in by reraising to 9000. Im thinkin I must be good. Then the big stack goes all in, about 26,000

Short stack folds and now I have a big decision to make. Im thinking I have to be good, big stack wouldnt put in all his money with a flush draw, and if he has two pair, it cant beat mine. The only thing I was afraid of was trips, but he would have raised harder with trip J's or trip Q's. Only think to be really scared of is trip 8's.

So Im thinking if I run into three 8's, thats just bad luck. So I call...

So once again:

Flop: J Spade Q Spade 8 Heart

Short Stack has: 9 Diamond 9 Club
I Have: J Heart Q Heart
Big Stack has: A Club Q Diamond

So im thinking im good and im going to take a commanding lead of the tourny. Turn comes 5 Heart which gives me more outs in making a flush draw.... Then the turn comes A Diamond !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I couldnt believe what had happened, I cant believe someone would call a raise that big with just a pair. At this point in the tourny when people are dropping fast, how could he think someone raising that big would have nothing but a pair? Its driving me nuts and now I cant study for my test coming up hahaha

but man, I think this was one of the worst beats ive taken. Im sure there were worse, but not when I had this much time invested, and I was doing so well

It depends if you were in late position or not (pre-flop call with QJs). If you were in late postion I don't mind it as much, but with hands like those I want my opponent to be fairly deep so that I get payed off well when I hit a very good flop. When you see a hand like QJs, you have to think about what you want to flop, how much your opponent has in your stack and if there's a good chance you'll get payed off.

When I flop top-two in that spot, I'm not getting away from it. At least I don't think so...

I agree with Johny, QJ is a good hand in LP but EP I am most likely not going to play it. I love these type hands in LP when you get a straight or open ended straight on the flop. This is where you can often raise and make people really wonder what type of hand you have. For instance...my daily routine of playing poker before work...saw me setting at a $0.05/$0.10 ring game this morning. I am OTB and get KQ Heart. Early raise to $0.20 and I am thinking this is worth playing to see the flop. 3 people counting myself in this hand. First to act fires in $0.20, second to act makes it $0.40. I flat call the $0.40 and so does villian 1. Next card on the turn is a 3 Diamond. V1 comes out with $0.40, V2 raises to $1.00, I go all in for $4.00. V1 folds and V2 calls. River brings nothing and V2 flips over a J6o. You got to love it when someone thinks they are on a hand and you really are.... Smile

Opps sorry about that. The flop was 9, 10, Jo. Forgive me. I have a bad cold and been heavy on meds for it today.

This is where you have to consider the difference in playing a multipayout satellite tourney and a freezeout. In this case, where it makes no difference if I finish 1st or 5th and I'm in this good shape, I wouldn't touch a hand like this at this point.

All you're concerned with at this point is surviving while others are falling around you. Play only hands where you have a definitive advantage and try to steal some blinds here and there.

If you want to play this hand against a short stack, raise him all in or fold preflop.

Personally, I'd fold it and let someone behind me take a crack at him.

I don't like the call here preflop, I mean your only playing this hand for 2-pair, straight draw or flush draw. Problem here is that the short stack is likely to make a play either way and say the flop comes 2-5-J how can you play QJ confidently now, especially with a player behind you. Also I'm assuming since it was only a 2xBB raise you might even get action from the BB as well if they are holding anything half decent, now your stuck in the middle in a raised pot and you have no idea where you stand.

If you can get in cheap with this type of hand in the late position with your stack its very nice to see a flop but I don't play this type of hand against short stacks because if they catch at all its going to be an all-in move and unless you have a good draw its going to cost you over time.

Another thing that I find sort of uneasy about this is the fact that hes short stack, and opening the pot for 2xBB. This sort of raise kinda scares me because it seems like he wants the pot juiced or even a re-raise, if I didn't see his hand I'd be thinking that most of the time he was holding a high PP (AA or KK).

Just my opinion, could be out in left field here but thats how I play it / see it.
