What I did--on the first try

Posted Sun Mar 19, 2006 2:46 am GMT by Casey ATB
At Poker Stars, I Played and won a qualifying tournament on Tuesday, 14 Mar, which provided an entry to a satellite tournament to be held on Saturday, 18 Mar. Prizes were: 2 $12K WSOP packages. That tournament ended a couple of hours ago. Results: Got very lucky and won one of the seats. So..., will be heading to Vegas in July to give it a shot. :D

I feel that bits and pieces I've gleaned from this forum gave me considerable assistance in getting the win, and I want to thank you. :D

I feel really great about this, as I am very new at tournament poker. My wife is so excited about it, as she has never been to Vegas. I used to go there quite often on junkets, but I always played craps and 21. Haven't been there in quite sometime. Should be interesting. :D

I just wanted to share my good news. Wish me luck. Would appreciate any tips or hints that might help make the tournament 'passage' a bit smoother. Again, many thanks. :D :D :D :D

Congrats and best of luck. The people to ask about what to expect from the ME are Adam and Carson. They probably have more experience in that tournament than anyone else here.

I'll buy the seat for $1. Laughing

Seriously man, that's fantastic, and I wish you the best of luck.

Now that my luck's started to change, I may be giving the satellites a try myself once I gather up some cash. I don't want to miss a shot at playing in what will probably be the juiciest tournament of all time.

The thing is, it didn't take cash, just FPPs, so I spent some of mine.

I've been looking at the WSOP 'Play Schedule' for the tournament, and it's going to be a bear for a few days. Ah, well. Shocked

Survive the first day and take them one at a time. It's just a simple matter of making the best possible decision every time you're dealt a hand. Easy right?

My only advice would be to play real tight on Day 1. Just play ABC Poker, get your money in with the best of it, protect it when you don't have it, and don't plan on running any big sophisticated bluffs--people will never believe that you act in such a straight-forward manner, because it's not what Poker players come to expect (and if any pros are at your table, they may give you more respect later in the tournament). Let the donkeys knock each other out for awhile, because all sorts of crazy shiat is going to happen in the first two days of the tournament (and probably after that too).

That's great! The main thing for you should be to have fun... and win the bracelet of course. Wink

I would suggest playing DeepStacks on PS, they are one of the closest MTTs to the main event structure online.

That would be cool, except PS gives you a bag of goodies (hats, shirts, etc.) with their logos on them, and gives ya $$ to wear them during the tournament. Also from PS, if ya make final table, ya get: $100K;
$250K for 2nd or 3rd place; and $1 million if ya win. Nice bonuses, huh? :D :D :D

I may be wrong, but i'm sure that they don't give you $'s to wear the gear, as far as i'm aware, wearing the logo stuff is part of the T&C of qualifying thru FPP.

I think that if you quallify by cash then you get the option of wearing it in exchange for your hotel room.

w/e it's no biggie, there will be about 5000 other ppl wearing sponsored apparel. I'm just being pedantic cos i'm so jealous Razz

I thought I remembered reading on their site you're required to wear their gear if you qualify through their site. I could be wrong on that, though.

In any event, congratulations, Casey, that's awesome. Enjoy, bring a laptop, we'll be expecting full trip reports.

Or maybe I'll stumble into a seat too. I guess it could happen... Rolling Eyes

That is too cool.

Congrats and best of luck!

Congratulations! :D We need some sort of symbol so that we can tell one of our own if they get on TV. Maybe a T-Shirt that says "I got my seat from PokerStars, but my skills came from THP." Laughing

If I see some guy at the final table with Lion mane hair and a long tail with a Poker Stars shirt, I'll Know.

Congratz!!!!

I'll be playing in one on Saturday, Johny4444. Thanks for all of the tips and congrats from everyone.

One more request for your invaluable assistance, please. I've just ordered a couple of books: Doyle's first one, and Gordon's "Little Green Book." Any suggestions for follow-up reading material? There are many books available, but I'm sure some are better than others. Thanks. Ciao.

I have a stubborness that won't allow me to read books on poker. I just don't want another voice in my head. However, I know quite a few who have read "Harrington on Hold'Em" and say it's a great book. The hubby has it and has actually read a bit of it and says it's insightful.

You'll probably get better suggestions from others though.

Harrignton's book is outstanding. I highly recommend it.

I would be. If someone thinks that's supposed to be an insult, he's an idiot.
