Just got back from a $150 buy satellite for a $10K Main Event seat at this years's WSOP. 180 players, with payouts to top 20 as follows:
1st - $10K buy in PLUS $5K in cash!
2nd - $4500
3rd - $2400
4th - $1550
5th -$750
6th-10th got something like $300, and 11-20 got their buy ins back
I came in 4th!!!!! $1550 in cash for a 5 hour tournament, but I ALMOST won a seat to the main event.
I doubled up on the second hand of the tournament with KK vs QQ, then had a decent run of cards. I knocked out 3 players within 15 minutes of the tourney starting. By the time the first break came, I was probably second in chips. The blind structure was a little too fast for my liking, but I can't complain with the result. Starting chips were 1000, blinds at 5/10 and essentially doubling every 20 minutes.
After the break, I proceeded to call (and lose) 4 all-ins pre-flop, 3 of those times I had the better hand going in...but that's poker. The tournament was actually run in 2 separate casinos simultaneausly (sp?), with each casino hosting 90 players and playing down to the last 10. We then convened at the other casino to redraw for seats and play to the finale. When we reached the payout structure, I had 3500 chips with the blinds at 1000/2000. I was second lowest chip stack. When play began I folded until my BB and looked down at AQ. Everyone folded to the SB who completed the blind and then called my all in. She turned over 3c 5c! :D :D
A few hands later I looked down to see KQo about 3 seats from the button and I went all in. The blinds folded and the limper in MP called with QJo :D . So now I'm a little more comfortable with my chip stack, but the blinds are so high my M was only about 6. I didn't play another hand until the final table. The blinds were at 2000/4000 and I'm in the SB with about 11K. Everyone folds to the button who goes all in. I look down and see Ac 9c and called off all my chips. He shows 4 4 and I make a straight on the turn! The very next hand everyone folds to me and I have KK on the button. I was tempted to minimum raise and have the BB (3rd most chips on table) come over the top, but decided to instead move all-in and hope the BB sees this as a steal attempt. No luck...everyone folded. That was really the last hand I played until my demise. The chip leaders were bullying the table and knocking everyone out!! Thankfully I was getting crap cards not worthy of pushing with (which snoog will probably give me an earful for). By the time I HAD to push, I was UTG (4 handed of course) and didn't even look at my cards. I didn't have enough chips to make a legal raise. The BB called with J 10o and I flipped over 3d 4d...
Oh so close!!! They're running another one exactly the same on Monday night, so I might try my luck again.....
I had already made plans to request a THP.COM shirt so I could wear it down to Vegas
