Is there such a thing as free money?! |

So I was on ebay and I saw a partypoker gift certificate for $500. It was going for 350 with an hour to go so I put $400 and won it. It said the guy won it at a tournament but didn't want to use it since he didn't play online poker. I found that reasonable and gladly took the $100 profit. When he sent the certificate, it wasn't a certificate but a phone connect card. I suppose that made sense...
In any case, a few days later he contacts me and tells me that he has another one. Sold me that one for $300. I was a little weary but it went through without a hitch.
He contacts me again and offers me four more for $1000. He tells me that I can send him four $250's so I'm never down.
Now, this was too good to be true so I inquired further how and why he's doing that. He changed his story and told me that he's absolutely not using a stolen credit card (I looked on his ebay history and he sold 5 certificates over a month and a half so if he was, I'm guessing he would've been caught by now.) He explained that he's working for a european phone company which has connections with partypoker and they're giving employees these cards for them to sell.
It makes no sense though...nothing makes sense. But it's a free grand...
Too good to be true? Laundering drug money? Any reprecussions for me? What do you guys think?
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

Is there such a thing as free money? No. Is what this guy is doing legal? Hmmm, I dunno. It, like many other things in this world, is debateable.

If what the guy is doing is legal, then it is free money.
First you say no but then you say maybe/dunno. Do you think there is a chance that what he is doing is legal, whatever that may be? (any guesses at that would be nice too)
I'm probably going to resist the temptation to deal with that guy any more but I thought this would could spawn a nice discussion so I posted it.

this sounds like a no-brainer to me. obviously there's something shady going on or the guy wouldn't have changed his story on you.

Two things I try to always remember:
Don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see.
.....................and...................
If it seems too good to be true, it either isn't true or it's illegal.

Dang wich are you Wench...no true or illegal?...
Tempuser:
Seriously what the heck are these cards? I agree though, if it sounds like too good of a deal it probably isn't. Have you logged onto partypoker and used them? How would you redeem them?

Gotta be illegal. I'm way too honest.

As long as you're getting the things and they work I don't see how you could get in any trouble.
I'd be careful though, he's definately doing something fishy. Otherwise why wouldn't he just be cashing these himself? He wouldn't have to be a poker player to do that.

Basically they're phone cards that can be used as such. Most people deposit from their CC and Party Poker redeems them for the full value into your account..
It sounds like this guy has definitely stolen a few (atleast) credit cards, purchased Phone connect cards and is now selling them.
I don't see any possible way that their isnt something shady going on here

It does look super fishy to me. Apparently, you've become a target for the guy. He knows you'll buy what he has. He looks nearly like a drug dealer who is selling you dopes. It is either gonna end badly or it is illegal.

Woah woah woah. I would have gotten out after he sent me a phone connect card, but that's just me. If he's already pulled this much bullshit, he's not going to give you the freaking gift certificate. Donnnn't pay.
