Perhaps the most exciting thing I did since moving to Las Vegas was watch some of the action at the tables! I've played in tourneys before, and I've watched some others live, but none have the same allure as this tournament. I should have gone every night, but I've had a pretty busy schedule. Some highlights....
Saturday night, May 17, 2003. $5,000 Limit Hold 'em. I saw two guys that were about my age sitting with the old timers. Two tables left and it was a little after midnight. They had their girlfriends there watching them and I didn't know they were their girlfriends. I didn't talk to 'em, but I sure as hell would be distracted if I saw someone flirting with my girlfriend while I was playing. When I saw one of the guys get ousted, I saw him walk out with a wad of bills in his hand. Wish that coulda been me!
Same night, the super satellite tables. This was by far the most emotional game I had seen ever, live. Here, they have satellites running 24 hours a day, and $50 can buy you into the single table satelite tourney, where if you win, you can get a seat into the super satellite, which normally you'd have to pay $220. The supersatellites can place a number of people into the big one, the $10,000 No limit hold 'em tournament, which is the crowning glory of the Poker world. I was watching two tables (20 players) duke it out for 12 seats into the main event. 12 of these people were gettting cash and going to the big one. Eight of them were not and were going home with zilch, nada, zero. I saw it get wired down to 14 players. At this point, everyone was taking a minute to decide what to do. Blinds were getting higher every twenty minutes, and soon even a good by the average stacks could jeopardize them. The most exciting moment at this point was when a very beautiful Vietnamese girl (with the hugest diamond ring on her hand who had never really played before) went all in with A K. She forced all but the small blind out, who coincidentally had a stack just as short. Whoever lost this hand was gonna be number 14, and go home with nada. He opens up a K 10, which is not good for him. Dealer lets out the flop. Rainbow. And nothing helps either. Then, a turn hits a 10. This guy became animated suddenly. Dealer taps the table, burns the top card, and an Ace! This girl just screamed and started jumping up and down! She was hugging the guy next to him! (In the poker world, you'll find that most of these guys just stink!) She had pretty much given herself a fighting chance to make it into "the big one". Only one other guy had a stack shorter than her at the other table.
And, I think that's why this tournament is so exciting. It's a really a chance for us to play alongside with the Gods of Poker, the tournament pros. I watched another guy, a novice, who had just won the omaho hi/lo tourney, 133,000 dollars, and a gold bracelet a few days earlier. He was wearing it at the tournament. You could even be the guy who busts David Sklansky at the limit tournaments. All the pros make it out there.
Probably the next exciting thing was this blonde I'll call Candy, though I never got a chance to talk to her. Platinum Blonde. Huge implant boobs inside a tight t shirt. She even brought her cute little Maltese (a breed of small dog) along. I saw her at one point sitting at a satellite table, and I wish I'd been next to her. She was wearing this shirt that said pacificpoker.com and I think she may have been paid to wear it. Good advertising! I normally play at the pokerroom or truepoker, and I wanted to ask her if she had a special promotional sign up code. LOL! Viva Las Vegas baby!
