Learning FL, but this is the right play, right?

Posted Tue Mar 28, 2006 7:43 pm GMT by Magra
Ok, I am learning to play FL. I didnt think of anything about this hand when it happened, but argued with a friend after. Sorry I dont have the hand history...

Folds around to me, im on the right of the button. I raise with KJsuited of Spade . BB and SB both call. Flop comes

4 Spade 10 Club Q Spade . SB checks BB bets. This is always a raise, right? Your drawing to an open ended straight draw, with the second nut flush.

So, raise or call?

I'm mainly a NL player, but I think a raise would be in order if you think both players would call it. Also, if you were first to act in this situation, it would be a nice spot for a check raise.

Also not a FL player (least not a good one) but I'd raise regardless of if I expected a caller and cap if I get action back to me.

Wouldn't be suprised to find I was wrong though, there are a lot better FL players on these boards than I.

Almost always raise.
1) you are a mathematical favorite to make a flush or straight by the river and your kind may be an out = big advantage especially short-handed.

2) You have a larger amount of equity on the flop then if a blank comes on the turn and villain fires again.

3) You might get the small-blind to fold a hand like K10 or K4 which is really good for you.

4) When you make your hand, you will tend to get paid off more because your hand may be disguised to a less-than-shrewd opponent.

5) If you only call with drawing hands and only raise with made hands you are playing to predictably and probably leaving money on the table.

You didn't say whether it was short-handed (raise, raise, raise) or normal ring (still raise) but it isn't terribly important in this situation. My big reasons are #1 and #5. My two cents.

Get as much money into that pot as possible.

Raise.

The only time not to is if you are UTG and have 2-4 to act behind you. In this situation, you are not only a favorite, but the raise can help disguise your hand, get a 3 bet or cap (hopefully w/ the SB hanging in there) or buy the pot right there when you were likely behind.

Oh absolutely raise. Your raise is strictly for value based on your pot equity, because you will probably win this pot at showdown a little over HALF the time.

The only reason you would call is if you think it would invite the SB into the hand and you think you can extract more from him later. Otherwise, I would just raise, so you might even get a free card if a blank hits on 4th street.

I concur.
