Rebuy tourneys, and mtt's in general, for a while anyways.
I realised that in the past week i've made about $500 playing sng's but have nothing at all to show for it on account of turning right around and ploughing it all into rebuy tourneys.
Now, i know that the rebuys can be incredibly profitable when i collect on them but i feel that if i can lay off them for say a month, i'm gonna have about $2000 in my pocket that i wouldn't otherwise have had. (unless i won a tourney)
You see my dilemma?
I could potentially make $25,000 a year grinding it out on sng's and my mtt game is for sh*t right now. So much as i love sitting at a final table with 1,000,000 chips in front of me, i'm going to take the (hopefully) more pragmatic approach for now.
I'm also going to be really strict and keep an accurate record of what/where/when/how much i'm playing for. I've been really bad at record keeping up til now.
Oh yeah! I'm also not gonna play any cash games... but that's just cos i f*cking suck at them.

SnG are not money makers dude, cash games and MTTs are the way forward.

Do not pass Go, do not collect $200.

Zeejustin made a couple hundred grand off them, no?

I've made plenty of money from them over the last 5 or 6 months...

IMO, you should only quit the high buy ins. Play the $1 MTTs, and practice your game. When you get the BR to play MTTs, you'll have better skills and be able to do better.
(I'm in the same boat as you)

At the moment, $33 9-handed tables. It's my comfort zone

You yourself posted my pokerdb form for the past couple weeks, it's been like that since Jan. I don't know what it is, well i have an idea, I am not in the zone right now. If i had been making $500 each week since Jan. i'd have $6000 by now?
I'm not saying i'm never gonna play another rebuy ever again, i'd rather cut my wrists, but i'm gonna experiment and see if i can make a goodly amount of cash rather than making it then blowing it.

If I was more driven to just achieve financially above everything else, I'd probably be 8 tabling SNGs myself. They're definitely quite profitable.

It would appear I am awful at SnGs then. I seem to break even a lot in the long run at SnGs

j/k you're not that bad, in facr you've cashed in 5 of your last 6 stt's so you're getting better?

i busted out of pokerstars eventually whittled $50 down playing in $5 sngs.
however i do quite well out of $10 sngs on vc and am toying with moving up to $20's.
i want to get back on stars. and i am sorry about the pointlessness of this post. but there you go.

It's fair comment Jonesy.
If i were to play $5 sng's on stars i think i would get creamed. i have done in the past and that's what happened. Even the $10 tables can be crazy with luck taking more of a part than good play. That's why i try to play min. of $33 tables, it is easier to predict what is happening by reading betting patterns.

I don't know about SNG's. When I first started playing I played limit poker - or at least I tried to. I read some books - but just got owned, over and over. After getting down like $500 - I came on here and whined about how bad it sucked to be "playing right" and still losing. Oh to be a fish.
Once I hit the last $100 of my second deposit I decided that something wasn't working. I started playing tiny NL SNGs with $2-5 buyins. Strangely my bankroll grew substaintially. Once I was back up over $500, I decided that I would go back to ring games, but this time play No Limit!
Now I must say that for a while there I was barely more than a break even player. BUT what I recognized then was that site bonuses are the single best way to make money playing poker. I started jumping from site to site draining bonuses and cashing out slightly more than my deposit + the bonus the majority of the time.
Months later I am now a decent player. I'm hardly a good player - but I feel like I am like 100X better than where I started back in August of 2005.
This all being said - I have had spurts where I would read online about how so and so is making tons of money at SNGs and I would think - I'm a decent player, why don't I do that too - it will be easy! For me - its not easy. I like to multitable right now - but SNGs seem to take more attention so playing more than 2 drastically decreases my success rate.
Its all what you like doing. I like playing 8 tables at .25/.50 NL - If you like to focus on one table and want final table tournament practice than SNGs are useful - but I don't know how profitable they are... In addition, bonuses are cleared far slower through SNGs than through ring games. This is the knockout punch - I currently earn nearly double my win rate through bonuses; its hard to make a case for playing SNGs...
PS getting 4th a few times in a row makes me feel like I want to die...
