Rushes Can't Last Forever

Well, my unabated winning streak has, well, abated. I went to go play the Mixed Games at the Davis house today, and to my surprise there were new players. We had only 6 players at the table, including two girls (first time we ever had girls at that game):

Me
Emily (cool girl from Melbourne)
Katie (another cool girl from San Francisco)
John the LAG
Mark the TAG
Ray the Gambler

Made for an interesting table. I made sure not to underestimate the ladies' talent the way the other guys did--any player who would step into that game must have some Poker balls, regardless of actual testicle possession. When I got there, we started off playing 7-Card Stud. John was making a habit of betting on almost every street, but every time Emily got in the pot with him, she was absolutely tearing him apart--checking, trapping, slowplaying... and he just kept getting more frustrating. One hand I got in with Emily and John, I made a 10-high straight on 5th street, and we capped the betting. Emily caught a Jack on 6th street, I caught zip, and John paired Queens on board. He bet out, I raises, and Emily re-raised. John called. I thought I might have been in trouble, but I couldn't leave my children out there, so I called. The river gave me a Jack. John bet again, I called, and Emily came right out and raised again. John rolled his eyes and called. I looked at both of them, and I was confident I'd figured it out. Emily had made a jack-high straight on the turn, which I'd now tied (it was extremely unlikely she had the Q-high with John having two Queens, and probably a third, and she would have to have 3 spades down to have a flush). John I figured for three Queens that he would never fold. I re-raised. Emily capped, winking at me. John threw his money out on the table. As I suspected, we each drew an extra bet from him by trapping with our identical straights. John looked at me, frustrated, and said, "it was obvious she had you at least tied." I smiled and said, "yes, but you didn't." The girls got a kick out of that one, and John left the table to go play in the NL game. Five-handed Stud is a weird game, but we all had a good time. The next round, we agreed to play some A-5 Triple Draw, and good God, the girls were cleaning house. I don't think either of them drew anything less than a perfect 7 in almost every pot. Even the one wheel I made had to be split with Katie. I donated a few bets to the Ladies' Poker Fund, but Mark and Ray donated a lot. They soon decided to move to the NL game, and it was just me and the girls. They decided they didn't want to play 3-handed, so we grabbed 4 other people to start a new NL table.

The NL game there now has a $0.25 ante and $1/$2 blinds--personally, I really like the structure, but it wasn't going to be a good day. I bought in for the max, $300, as did everyone else, and we were off playing. I was getting kicked out of pots left and right when a scary card would fall on the turn, and an even scarier card fell on the river. Finally, I picked up A Diamond 5 Diamond and flopped a flush, J Diamond 8 Diamond 2 Diamond . I bet, Emily raised, and I decided to smooth call. The turn came the Q Diamond , and I decided to use the old donk bet to draw some more cash, but she had none of it and came over the top for my whole stack--I of course called, horrified when she flpped over 10 Diamond 9 Diamond for a straight flush. I grimaced, told her she played well, and decided to quit, as I knew my state of mind wasn't the best. Between the loss of that $300, about $48 in the mixed game, and $176 playing 9-table tournies, I'd dropped a lot of my winnings from the Stud Hi/Lo tourney I'd won the other day.

I came home and felt a little refreshed, so I decided to play some SnGs (single table this time). $30 seemed good, and I quickly registered for three. Happily, I recooped some of my losses by finishing 3rd, 2nd, and finally 1st. As of now I'm waiting for my girlfriend to come home, and I should probably get back to, you know, actual school work... *sigh*

Diamond 8) Diamond

PS. Also, I'm playing in my first ever multi-day tourney this weekend at the house. Half the field (36 players) will play down to 9 on Friday, the other half will play down to 9 on Saturday, and the final 18 will finish on Sunday, with 7 places paid ($50 buy-in). I think it should be fun. Smile

Tough luck with that nut flush against straight flush. Damn it sounds like those girls can play? Or were they just checking amazing cards?

No no, they could definitely play. They were playing pretty aggressively as well as catching good cards. And they were rather good at toying with the male ego.

...and the eye candy is always nice...
