2nd Foxwoods trip - big success

Posted Wed Apr 05, 2006 1:52 am GMT by mackkie
I originally bought in for $85 at the 1/2NL table. If you read my previous post about my first trip, i played well for about 20 mins, then lost $70 after 40 minutes. This time around I was a lot more shakey than I was in the first trip, maybe because I felt a lot more pressure after an unsuccessful first trip. Here are 3 hands that come to memory:

I sit down, post blinds and get nothing. Second hand i get is K Spade Q Club. I am in late position and raise to $20 and get 3 callers.
Flop comes out: K 8 4
Player #1 checks, Player #2 bets $20, I raise to $40, everyone calls
Turn: A (no flush possibility out there, although i dont remember suits of these cards)
I only have $25 at this time and was either going to call/bet my final $25 reguardless of the turn card. Player #1 bets $25, all players call
River: 9 - checked between player 1 and 2
No less than 5 minutes from sitting down i thought i lost my $85 and i was very angry.
Everyone turns their cards over, I have KQ, Player #1 has K7, Player #2 has K10, I triple up in 5 minutes and have $255 to play with Laughing

A Couple hands later I get KJo
I raise $15 and get a couple callers, flop comes out K 8 3. I bet out w/ $20 and only get one caller. A on the turn, both check. Q on the river, Player bets $15 and I call. He flips over Q8 and hes got me beat.

My chip stack is dwindling down to about $135 or so. I was in first position and got dealt 66. I raise to $15. Player #1 (loose player) raises to $30, Player #2 calls, Player #3 raises all-in to $40. Everyone calls and we got a nice little pot brewing and im praying for my set.
Flop comes out: 5 6 5 Shocked Shocked
Its checked to Player #2 and he goes all-in for his last $25-$30. Player #3 is already all-in and i decide to raise to $85 to the loose player (prob just shoulda called and see if he raised) but, he folds.

Everyone flips their cards...Player #2 shows AQo, Player #3 shows 77, I show 66. Rags come out on the turn and river. I suddenly find myself raking in a $190 (roughly, it was a rush/blur and all i know is I walked outta the poker room w/ $310) pot, putting me to $310 on the night after 1 hour of poker.

I only found myself shaking a lot only when I was stacking my chips after a big pot once I got comfortable at the table.

The only other "tell" I thought I gave away tonight was I quickly went all-in after I flopped a boat which im sure made it a really easy lay down for the other player behind me. If i checked my cards a few times and made it look like it was a really painful call/move to make, maybe he would have done something different.

I liked my pre-flop play much better this time, being the agressor for the most part as opposed to being the caller in most situations my first trip. I was also shocked that there were even more people calling w/ nothing at all when compared to my first trip.

After I walked outta the poker room, I met up w/ my buddies who were playing other things and I lost $100 play pai gao (sp?) poker and walked outta the casino up $115. Cant wait to get back there Smile

Went again tonight and got a couple good hands but other than that nothing.
Played for 3 hours, bought in for $100, cashed out for $175...in my last 2 trips i have won over $300 which im happy with. Couple quick hands:

1. I limp w/ early position w/ 66, gets raised to $10, 3 callers total.
FLOP: 2 2 6 Shocked (ring a bell from my post above?)
The pre-flop raiser goes all in for her last $29, other guy folded, i happily call.
I wish there were a few more people, preferably with a 2 to take advantage of, but hey, it was still a pretty good sized pot

Now i need some advice on my 2nd hand:
2. Im big blind with 64o, no one raises so i check.
FLOP: 3 5 7 Shocked (2 Diamond's on the board)
Girl in first position raises to $15, guy next to me calls.
Now i figure that someone has hit top pair with a good kicker and BOTH are relatively loose players. I decide to raise it up to $45 total. With the 2 people betting/calling infront of me, i thought i would get at least one to call! Both fold. I get like $40 in chips but im pretty unhappy with how i played this hand and the first thing i thought when sitting down at the table is i will post this on THP fourms for some advice as to how to play this better. Maybe make it $30 to go?

Advice please

Cant wait to get back again, up ~300 after 2 nights of poker, about 4 hours played total.

As per your last hand I think that you played it fine. It looks like no one had any hand to really play with you. If someone had an overpair, a diamond draw, 2-pair, or a set, then you made the right play because they are all most likely coming along. Sometimes luck in poker involves you making a big hand where someone else has a second best hand. Unfortunately, in this case, you got unlucky. I think the raise was the right amount.

Well that makes me feel a little better Smile I thought i played it well with 2 people already in for $15, i thought for sure i was gonna get a caller. It would have been nice, but u have to raise it there so people dont try to get their flush draw cards for cheap Smile

EDIT: funninest thing about my trips so far...I have won over $355 with pocket 6's and LOST over $150 with JJ

Quick story:
A guy sits down who doesnt know what a small blind/big blind is. I get JJ and raise to $15 pre flop. He calls. 2 hearts come out on the flop, but the highest card is a 9 out there. He bets $5, I raise to $20, he calls. Another heart out there, but its a low card. He bets $5, I raise to $25, he calls. Last card is a heart. We both check it. He flips over K2o but the king is a heart!. He called $60 of bets with NOTHING. He was pumped he won his first pot, so i just had to smile about it and say nice hand. It hurts when he catches 4 hearts to hit his K high flush vs. my J high flush (and JJ pair before the river card came out.)

Regarding your flopped straight: I agree you made the right play with your raise, better to take down a smaller pot than give someone correct odds to chase their draw. My only question is, if you were in the BB, how was there a bet AND a call before you after the flop?

Otherwise, nice hand. Sucks when you flop a monster but there are draws out there so you can't slow play it.

Yeah, i must have been the button or next to it...i know i limped in with nothing and hoping no one raised. Sorry for the confusion, i played for about 3 hours and it was early in the night so little details like that are a little hard to remember.

I just bought Harrington on Hold'em Volume I today and i was reading it. When reading the styles of playing a hand and coming across the "Rope a dope" section, I immediately thought of when I flopped the nuts. I was last to act and 2 people already bet and called $15. Instead of me raising, I should have just called and if a dud hit again, let them bet again. After the river I could have raised and this play would have been much more profitable for me as opposed to me raising to $45 after the flop and driving both players out of the hand. I am still OK with my raise there and thought it was a decent play with the information I already recieved from the two players, but its just a good thing to keep in mind for next time. I know his book is for tourney play but it still has some good points in there for cash games.
