Checking the river

Posted Thu Apr 06, 2006 11:09 am GMT by weirdofreek
I have just recently began checking the river against some one who has just called the whole way down when a scare card hits. For instance if I hold 10Js pre flop and called a small pre flop raise and flop comes something like J 3 7 rainbow I would, as most would, bet here but if the turn comes with a Q I will still bet and if not raised go to the river. If the river is checked to me unless my hand improved i will often check here as well since a bet is only likely to be called by some thing that beats me. I have lost alot of money recently fireing at pots that get called only to see I am beat. Checking the river saves the last bet. This may seem like a "no duh!!" to most but I wanted to throw it out there.

If a hand has some showdown value, checking the river is often the simple solution.

Learning this concept is essential (do I hear a Snoogins part 3?).

One thing a lot of people don't realize is that checking the river also has some "mix up your play" value. I tend to only bet on the river when I KNOW I have the best hand (or I can only win with a bluff on the river). Its useful to check on the river with top/middle pair hands, but I'll even occasionally check a powerful hand like a two pair, set, or a middle flush / straight if there is a possiblity that I'm beat. This is useful because:

1) You might be beat - you save money.
2) You might be ahead - but if you bet your opponent has an opportunity to bluff in a way that forces you out of the hand - or at least to make a difficult call.
3) You might induce a small bluff against a hand that you can beat.
4) You make your opponents' future decisions more difficult. They don't know when you check on the river if you have them beat or not - so they are more inclined to check it too.
5) Most hands are not worth 50% or more of your stack. The river is often the largest bet made in a hand - so you win/lose smaller pots with smaller hands - and you choose to win/lose bigger pots with bigger hands.

I think if I was to write a list of 10 of the most important intermediate-advanced holdem concepts this would be on it - its huge for being a conservative player, but also a dangerous one...

Checking the river is usually best if a bet has little to gain but a lot to lose.

It's kinda like, a bell-curve, but not really.

You all know how a bell curve goes, right?

Well, say the X-Axis is the strength of your hand, and the Y-Axis is how much you should want to check the river. It works surprisingly well.

Quoted for truth , for me its as simple as this. Sometimes i really really want to bet the river , make a little more. But unless im on a bluff , or I have even the slightest amount of uncertainty , ill check.

Unless of course I feel they can beat me but are a little weak , then I might fire off a third bullet. but thats probably a leak in my game , bluffing those unwilling to fold , no matter how weak.

I do it when a real scare card hits, especially early on. I don't know how many times I've left a player who finally hit his hand with no bets by checking behind him.

I play fairly fast though normally, if you called my flop and turn bet, I tend to slow down on the river unless I'm very strong. I also submit that players who check raise the river are normally the weaker players at the table. The better I think you are, the less worried I am about a river check raise and will normally just check if I am worried I do not have enough to win, unless I was drawing and missed myself in which case I've got nothing to gain by checking.
