How do I play AA

Posted Sun Apr 09, 2006 10:45 am GMT by Ryan231
Early position early in the tournament how the hell do I play this hand? Sometimes I just limp in hoping for a raise but that kicks me in the ass sometimes when the rest of the table just limps in. In early position I have a had time extracting any value out of this hand, anyone have any tips ? My problem is I really have a hard time laying this hand down unless the board comes something really crazy like 3 suited cards.

Make a large raise to about 5-8xBB. Never just limp with it early in a sng because the players are prone to limp with anything at this time. I actually have a post on here about something really simmilar. I'm gonna find it.

Oops. It doesn't really apply to your question as much as I thought it would. Sorry

If its an aggresive table limping from UTG isn't a bad play. Just remember that if you don't get raised that you have to be prepared to dump the hand against any resistance.

If there is a raiser and everyone else folds then you can decided if you want to concele your hand by just calling. You already have got what you want, heads up seeing the flop. Limp/raising screams AA or KK so I only like to do it if 2+ players have called a raise.

I think he did. There's no point in us attacking each other, how about we all take a step back and forget about it?

I agree with a poster above. If you're playing an aggressive table, it's OK to limp occasionally from early position ... because you're likely gonna see a big raise anyway.

If you're a very, very tight player ... you might also consider limping, because any significant raise preflop will scare the entire table off.

Otherwise, I personally like to stick with the 4x BB preflop raise for AA and KK. (Don't get me going on AK).
IMO, raising more than 4x BB usually raises alarm bells ... and will likely keep you from winning a bigger pot.

I don't think I've posted that many bad beat posts.. maybe 1 or 2 tops? I just find myself not able to let this hand go on the flop and end up all-in against a flush draw or 2 pair a lot and its nobody's fault but my own. I guess raising is the best bet its just so sad when you raise 4-5xBB and everyone folds.

You should switch it up. If you go all-in everytime you have AA or KK people will know what you have everytime you go all-in and will fold. When i get AA it depends on the table. I sometimes will make a small raise like i would with a low pocket pair (8's)(2-3 BB) or make a large raise (5-6 BB).

We hate you Zinno? Dang why didn't someone tell me before that I have to hate you... Laughing...no matter buddy you still have one friend...me... Smile

As for this AA in EP. Easy play there. 4-6xBB pre-flop. The only callers or raisers will be AK or KK, doubt QQ but no matter. If anyone comes over the top pre-flop then slam all-in baby. Chances are your AA will hold up and win. If not leave and go sign up for another tourney. No harm and no foul. You got all your chips in with the best hand. It will happen sometimes that you will get beat but not often.

While I agree that it is important to mix up your game, in general, you can't go wrong raising and re-raises with Aces. Limp-raising in most games is a dead giveaway of a high pair or occasionally AK, unless you make a habit of doing it with other hands. Against a field of aggressive players, I will occasionally make a move like this:

I limp UTG with Aces. Everyone folds to the button, who raises 4x the BB. The blinds fold. Since I'm last to act here, I will sometimes just call rather than re-raise and try to extract more value on the hand.

95% of the time, especially if you're inexperienced, I would just raise and re-raise with Aces.

Wow, did I miss some fireworks? Laughing

As for the question of how to play AA? Simple.
Fold preflop.

Who the hell let bluefox back in?

Early in SNG's, I will make a raise larger than I would later in a SNG. My reason for this is that everyone's M in the first few levels is basically the same unless they donk off a lot of chips or clean up from a donk playing into them. Most players (in SNG's $5-$40) will want to see a flop with their QTs even with a 4xBB raise as that amount (100?) is very nominal to their stack size. Therefore, i will usually raise at least 5-6xBB. If I only take the blinds, alas, that is the way it is. However, if I get a caller or two (which is the norm for me), I want to extract as much as I can from them. Basically, I feel that it's very tough to thin the field early in a SNG when the blinds are extremely small. I don't want to have 6-8 players seeing the flop with me when I'm holding aces. If I do, I have to be prepared to let them go.

I will also reraise a raiser in front of me or a reraiser behind me.

Oh, and generally raise with AA. If you just pick up the blinds, oh well. Better to win a small pot than lose a large one.

I say generally because sometimes it can be profitable to limp with it early if you know you'll get action. You have to be pretty certain that someone will bet though, and you have to know that you are able to lay down AA if you need to later after letting people in.

I have seen instances like this. If you get a wild loose player setting at your table then it can be very profitable to limp with AA. But do so carefully.

I was playing at a table online the other day and ran into a chip bully. This guy was opening any 2 cards with a 4xBB bet. I set at this table for a rotation or two and then hit AA. Knowing he was going to raise like this I just limped. When he raised to 5xBB I called. Flop brought out much of nothing in a rainbow of colors. Bully bet a pot sized bet and I went all in. He calls me and I go on to win the pot.

After that hand he just went on total tilt. He finally started playing normal poker after he lost about $30 at a $0.05/$0.10 table.

I do it in EP in cash games quite a bit. In a tournament though, 9 times out of 10 I'm raising the roof unless I know I can trap someone else into doing it for me. It depends on the players, my read, my position, etc.

The going to hell part.......well, not because you limp with aces.

Nah it just makes you a potential nut peddler... Laughing...and possibly one of the fish I am always looking for... Laughing

Seriously there is nothing wrong with limping AA if you have good reads on the other players and now how they will bet certain hands. If you unsure then raise pre-flop with AA.

Just won a SnG on this hand....but god damn was i sweating bullets on the turn and river! I called the blind, he raised me and I raised him. He was re-raising me almost every hand so I was almost sure he was gonna raise me again after the flop.
