when two sets collide.

This can be possibly one of the most bitter things in texas hold em. Look at a couple of examples....

1. You limp in with 5 Spade 5 Diamond . Theres no raise.
Flop: 8 Spade 5 Heart A Diamond
You hit your set of 5's and it all seems wonderful. But wait, some other guy has limped with 8 Club 8 Heart .
Of course you don't know this and theres bound to be fireworks. But the true horror of your situation becomes apparant if you look at the odds here. The guy with the 8's is in fact 95.66% favourite!

2. You limp with 3 Spade 3 Diamond . Again no raise.
Flop: 10 Diamond 4 Diamond 3 Heart .
Again it looks great. You hit your set. But again another player has limped with 10 Spade 10 Heart .
Now here the 2 diamonds give you an outside chance of the flush but your odds are still terrible. You have only a 8.89% chance of winning here.

The situation where 2 players both hit their sets probably happens mostly when both have low or middle pairs. I would say more people raise with high pairs, though u sometimes get the odd limper with AA. Shocked

The thing is that its a situation when quite often your whole stack goes in the middle and yet your odds can be just about as bad as they get.
Not actually sure why I'm waffling on about this. It was just something I was thinking about...

I don't think I've ever had a flopped set vs. set situation yet, that's odd.

Posted Sun Apr 09, 2006 1:51 pm GMT by zeroswarm
well I guess it doesn't happen too often. Its just one of those situations where you can possibly lose your whole stack through no real fault of your own.
I mean, how do you get away from a flopped set cheaply?

I couldn't get away from a flopped set, on the flop that is. I have no problem going broke getting all my money in with a set on the flop.

Set over set has happened to me only 2 or 3 times in as many years, it's not something i worry about greatly it's just one of those situations like KK v AA All your money is going in the middle and theres nothing you can do about it.

It is very rare.

Altho it probably happens to huskie about 3 times a day....

I probably couldn't get away from the set either. I'd take my loss like a man and smack the crap out of the couch.

I remember waaaaay back when I first started playing online. I'm pretty sure it was 100NL, and the following hand came up...

The pot was raised 3xBB, and there were 2 callers.

Flop was 753 rainbow

callers check to the raiser who bets about half the pot. 1st caller min-raises, 2nd caller min-raises the min-raise, and the original raiser pushes. Both players call and everyone turns over their cards...

33
55
77

That is when I became convinced that online poker was rigged.

Shocked

Are you guys serious about the only once or twice? I've had it atleast 20 to 30 times in the past two years. I've folded one and lost a whole bunch of money on the rest.

I don't play very much though and I don't multitable. That's probably why.

i have seen it happen, i have been on the winning side of it though were i had the top set. i know that when i have a set the only thing i am looking at is whether there are same suits on the board or straight possibilities. so i wouldnt be able to get away from a set either. whenever i seem to have a set there is always a flush possibility and i am forced to go all in and not slow play my set.

One of the books I read said that if you don't lose a lot of money when you flop an underset, then you probably didn't play the hand right.

I had it happen to me twice this weekend. I one once and lost another. Unfortunately, the loss happened in the same session as the win, so all those chips just went to the other player. I was not amused.

It happened to me twice within an hour against the same player w/ the same 2 pairs and I was on the losing end of both last time I was in Vegas.

I also won a monster ($200+) 3/6 pot w/ AA when 3 of us flopped a set. I think that was AA 88 33. All I did was call as they capped each street.

I won a big one last night @ 8/16. Total action game, I raised from mid position w/ 77-5 or 6 callers. Flop J73 and bet out. Turn was a 6 and I was check raised by the blind. I was a bit worried about 45 but called (we had one more calling with us). River was another 6, blind bet I raised both just called. He had 33. I was shocked that he didnt 3 bet w/ his boat-good play by him.

There seems to be some question about how often this actually does happen.
Wonder what the actual odds would be?

Posted Mon Apr 10, 2006 10:16 pm GMT by Dave B
I think limit vs NL makes a difference. I see it about every 2-3 hours at a table in limit games.

Because of the bad beat jackpot, you get a lot more players playing any pair at our casino.

In normal cases, w/ 2-3 seeing a flop, low pairs should be mucked.

I saw set over set over set, turn quads, river higher quads.....in a live tournament. The action was incredible. I felt sorry for the guy with the aces who lost his whole stack with his full house.

I've had it happen to me many times online and live. Most of the time it cost me a good deal. In two live games I got a great read on my opponent and laid down my bottom set. In another I went broke with my underset. It's part of the game and does happen often, but I'm not going to fear it every time I flop a set.
