Proper way to announce your action? |

Lets say the call to me is $50 and I want to raise an additional $50. Do I announce "I raise $50" Or would it be "I raise $100"?
I know I dont want to say I call $50 and raise $50 because that would be string betting.

Where I played, as long as you declared raise you didn't have to say how much. The dealer announced the amount. As far as your example, I would say you could say it either way. Whether you say "raise 50' or "raise to 100" you have yourself covered.

Yeah Rasie To is a good way. That way you annouce what the going bet is. So nobody has to ask. did you raise 100 more or it it 100.

Yeah, what ballbp said is the way it's done in my experience.

In the poker room you just say "I raise" and let you chips and the dealer do the rest. Just don't string obviously.
In home games I will announce "I raise $50, to make it $100" (using your example).
And in home games where everyone is blotto drunk I will announce "I raise $50, to make it $150"   (only attempt this with good friends and take there keys if they didn't catch on).

Hey Junk- I never announce the amount I want to raise until I actually have the amount I want to raise for in my hand. I don't care if it is a 2-10 stud game or no-limit tournament. I take my time- but not forever, maybe a few seconds when the action is to me. In a no limit game, I wait to see what the action ahead of me is like (raises/calls/re raises/etc.) Then when it is my turn and if I have decided to raise. I count my chips out of what I want to raise and then look to see who's looking at me. If I'm in a limit game, I just throw in the chips and so its already declared as a raise without me saying anything. In a tournament, I announce "Raise" when I have the amount in hand(s) then when I push it in, I announce the amount. It's good to torture a couple of players- even if its for a few seconds. But really, I do this to while keeping an eye on other players- I may get lucky and pick up a players hand strenght. If an opponent starts looking at their chips, begins counting them, or even sighs, it can help me determine how much to raise and if I may be raising into a re-raise.
Be careful of string bets! It has happened to us all and it SUCKS! If you don't know what a string bet is, its usually a bet/raise where you throw in X amount of chips and then go back to your stack for more chips to bet. That is a No-No. When you bet or raise, you must either do one of two things;
1) Announce that you are raising before you push in any chips (but not necessarially the amount)- theoretically speaking- you can then throw in your intended bet/raise chip by chip until you are finished.
2) Push in the exact amount of chips you are betting/raising without saying anything- but make sure you have the count correct because after the chips have left your hand you cannot go back for more, hence a string-bet.
Most beginning players do not know about String Betting and I call people on it all the time, If you do catch someone doing it- its usually because they don't know any better. Call them on it anyway, they need to learn. Players who know what they are doing with string bets is trying to get information from opponents after they already bet. If they see that a player begins pondering to call or not- then the string bettor will try to nail the coffin shut with a larger raise or bet to sway the opponents' decision.
