Alright folks, I wanna hear what you think.
I was watching WSOP on TSN, and they had some interviews going on the side. The results were split down the middle. Half of the players said game, other half said sport. I don't remember too many specific details but Helmuth was saying that you have to be arogant to only see it as a game. Another pro said "If you can drink a beer while playing it, it's not a sport." Personally I beleive that playing it as a profession, it can be considered a sport, otherwise, game.
What do you think? 8)
**EDIT** I added a poll.
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

They said it best on the WSOP cast...
"Poker is not a sport; sports are athletic."
"If you can drink a beer while performing the activity, it's not a sport."
It can still be a great game without being a sport. Chess, Backgammon, Risk, Monopoly, and StarCraft are all great games, but I'd never think of calling them sports.

Why in the world would it matter if you designate poker as a game or a sport? It is what it is...ain't nobody going to think you're stronger or have more endurance because you play poker.

In the greater scheme of things, nothing matters. Anything you might do in this life will not amount to a hill of beans as far as the universe is concerned.
So why in the world bother posting this response?

I must disagree.
Golf is a sport. I have never played a round without a beer in hand.
Baseball / Softball is a sport. Go to any diamond and you'll find a few cases of beers.
Sport Fu_king is rarely, if ever done without beer.

It's neither a sport nor a game...to some it is a job. To others it is a recreational past time. To still others it is life. Poker is an art. Poker is a skill. Poker is all things to different people. If it is a sport or not who knows. Is ying really ying without yang? Is karma bad because the person is bad? Wouldn't a better question be would the universe still exist without poker? It's just a deep thought day in a rather shallow mind...

A sport is something that requires years of honing physical as well as mental skills to master.
poker requires mental skills.
But to be able to play at the top level, or any level for that matter, you do not have to train your body at all.

It isnt physical in the way a sprinting is, but it is physical in other ways. Doesnt it ever get your heart racing? Dont you ever feel spent over a 10-14 hour session? Can you play 14 hours for 2-4 days in a row to make the final table without it impacting you physically?
I would say that it is not a sport. I also think that you are crazy if you dont believe that there is not a physical component to the game.

I agree with that.
My main argument was basically that something like soccer requires tip top physical shape in order to compete in, whereas in poker there is no disputing that having a great physical form definitely will benefit you during those long sessions, it is not required to play at a top level like soccer or baseball would be

I guess if you set up some rules and goals and competed with someone, sex and job hunting could be made into sports.
I'm really just playing devil's advocate here, and I know we're beating a dead horse, but to the "it's not a sport" crowd: What are you basing that on? It sounds like you're just basing it on your own idea of what a sport should be or something.
If you have developed a set of rules for something and are actively competing with someone then that is, by definition, a "sport". Most sports involve strenuous physical activity, so when someone says "sports" that is what we think of; someone running, throwing a ball, hitting a ball, kicking a ball, etc. Think about some other "sports" that don't readily pop into your head when you hear the word: bowling, fishing (when done competitively), auto racing. I don't think you can argue that those are sports, however they really don't require much more "physical" movement on the individual's part than poker does (ok, bowling kind of does, but you can be an overweight SOB and still do that). Where are you drawing the line if you're so convinced that poker is definately not a sport.
Let me just say one more time, I've never been one to call poker a sport, but since we're arguing about it anyway, I don't see why it couldn't be correctly called one.
*disclaimer* - This argument is meant for entertainment purposes only. Anyone caught taking it seriously will be severely beaten.

Is your job a sport? Have you never felt tired after 10-14 hours at it? Can you work for 2-4 days in a row without it impacting you physically?
I realize that words are just codified interpretations, but there's got to be some reasonability here. And lets look at the majority of people who DO call poker a sport : Douches. Douches, the lot of them. People more interested in hyping up their overweight asses than thinking reasonably. Morons and douches, even.

I get breaks and lunches. Most tournaments you never get more than a 5-15 minutes away. I also dont do 12-14 hours at a time in the same place, I have meetings, walk around, post to naive young clueless Canadians, etc.
That said, my job has a physical component. Most jobs do. That doesnt make them sports.
Anyone who can honestly say that there is no physical component to poker is a complete moron.
BTW-Again, I dont feel that poker is a sport. What dont you understand nimrod? Eh?

Like Zinn said, sitting in front of your computer clicking a button is not very active.
You can be laid up in a hospital bed in a full body cast, but one arm works, and play on a laptop.
Stephen Hawking can study the game for years, be as good as any pro, hook up a gadget so he can give commands, and play solid poker.
I agree with Dave, a physical component exists in that you need to be able to sit and play for long periods of time with your mental abilities at their full capacity. But even for just a devil's advocate, argument's sake discussion, I draw a nice, thick, easily recognizable line between sport and competitve game.

Ok, let me ask you "game" people again, what are you basing that on? I'm not disagreeing with you necessarily, I'm simply asking.

I don't recall saying that anything that is hard is a sport. So, by your logic, for something to be called a "sport", it has to be played by an athlete? So if I played basketball or soccer with some friends, we wouldn't be playing a "sport" because we're not athletes?
Your logic of what qualifies as a sport isn't making a whole lot of sense.

If you reach the pinnacle of your profession and find yourself to be an out of shape average Joe then what you do for a living isn't a sport. I can concede things like race car driving as they do require an above average level of physical fitness. However, poker, golf, bowling can all be done at the highest level by schmoes who couldn't make it up the stairs without getting winded. Therefore things like that qualify as games of skill, not sport.

So everything is a game unless athletes are playing it, in which case it is a sport?

This is really, really saying something, but this probably rates right up there with the lamest arguments I have ever seen. I can't even read it all. Truthfully. I love to argue about a lot of things, but arguing over the definition of a word that's actually in the dictionary?
Besides, poker has to be a sport. I mean, I feel like more of a wreck after full live session of poker than I EVER did after a baseball/basketball game.

Apparently your job isn't as boring as mine .
But yeah, it is a pretty stupid argument.

Glad I started it!

It's only because you're arguing about codification, nothing more. Words are only worth as much as you put into them.... Hobbes said that, or something. It's still fun to watch you guys fight about this stuff.
Especially because poker isn't a sport. Stupids.

I'm going to open a whole new can of worms here, I'm afraid, but auto racing is not a sport either.
well then u should try it sometime |
I'd love to try it. That would be great! I wouldn't want to just drive around in circles though. That would be mind-numbing and repetitive. Let me open her up on the highway to about 200+ MPH. That would be awesome!!

And we fear women drivers now...imagine Wenchy behind the wheel of a 200 MPH bullet...god save us all.... .
Now on to this dang stupid arguement if poker is a sport or not. Years ago I would have said no. Now with the current state of poker I almost have to argue it is a sport. Anytime something is done with sponsors, for money and with professionals it has to be deemed a sport. Now stop the damn argueing because you all know I am right yet once again....
What does it really matter if it is a sport or not? Do you enjoy doing it? Does it have entertainment value? Then who gives a crap if you call it a sport or a game. The important thing is continue to play it and enjoy it.

Ok when does porn have a sponsor (besides you Supa and your right hand... )?
I know sometimes you get championship type events for video games but I don't think it qualifies as a sport for various reasons.
a) Nothing to qualify for.
b) These are usually a single contest.
c) The prize money is usually small peanuts compared to most other competitions.
Honestly I still agree that this is a darn crazy post and I can not believe the amount of responses it has received and the arguements it has caused.... . Good job creating this to the original poster.

Don't be silly. Supa's left-handed.
Sorry, supa, I couldn't resist.
Supa has a point though. There are numerous competitions out there that gain backing from sponsors and have "professional" players. There are chess matches that have local and national sponsorships. I wouldn't consider chess a sport. It's a damn fine game, but not a sport. JMO.

I have played semi-professional rugby and was taught the following:
To be a winner, you need a combination of 'heart and b*llocks' (for those in the US, b*llocks=testicles, (but is also another word for courage, determination and willingness to be brave))
This means; if you play with your heart in the first half, you need alot of b*llocks in the second. Visa-versa, if you play with your b*llocks in the first half, your heart should get you through the second!
To be a winner in poker, you do need b*llocks, but you don't need your heart. (But more your brain!)

Completely wrong on all accounts.
a) Counterstrike alone has atleast a half dozen major leagues. The largest has 4 different skill levels of which you can only qualify by beating or placing in the lower one. This takes a minimum of 2-3 years (Because there are seasons for each level)
b) Nope. Round robin matches, tournaments, and an amount of organization and competition that would make any poker player green with envy. Not to mention worldwide championships involving corporate sponsors, free airplane tickets and hotel accomadations for people barely out of their teens. The world championships for several games are held all around the world, with some of the most diverse teams of any game/sport/competition in the world.
c) CS's grand prize has been over a quarter million in the past. This doesn't include hundreds of thousands in sponsorship deals, individual licensing agreements with computers, mice, mousepads, keyboards, screens, etc, that all see people making money that puts your salary to shame. That's just one particular game, too. Individual based video game finals usually have prizes in the tens of thousands, and there are a few self-made millionaires (Fatality, etc) from these alone.
Just because you've never had an orgasm doesn't mean they don't exist.

Ok so I do stand corrected...thank you Supa for clearing that up... ...but honestly to you does it matter if poker is called a game or a sport? You just love the arguement about it don't you?... .
Oh yes and watch that Wench...she does kiss and tell.... ...and a whole lot more....
