If someone raises 4 or 5 times the blind it often means they've got a powerful hand. Sometimes they haven't but we'll ignore that possibility for now...
What confuses me more is when someone simply doubles the blind. I'm talking early in sngs here, when the big blind is like 15 and they double it to 30 for example.
Exactly what does this mean?
If they are trying to eliminate other players from the hand then this type of raise is obviously too small. So are they playing a less than premium hand but still a decent one and are simply trying to build up the pot a little?
What range of hands are they likely to be playing with such a raise? Any thoughts?

1st off, alot of the time it's a simple mistake. Ppl press the raise button without seeing where they put the slider, etc.
2nd off, if it wasn't a mistake, it almost always means they're horrible players.
3d, if they do it from UTG or UTG+1, they often have a big pair (QQ+). If you have decent cards, consider raising behind them and seeing what they do. Alot will reraise or push all in. This is a trap. Fold.

I'd have to somewhat agree with supa on this one. I wouldn't say horrible player but perhaps horrible play. What does it accomplish? Pretty useless IMHO.

horrible plays = horrible players
I should know.

I will do this if I am 1st to come in w/ a hand like KJ A10 88 99, something good enough to play, but not good enough to risk a bigger raise for.
It does chase away some marginal limping hands behind you and gets you into a thinner pot w/ the blinds.

Early in a SnG/MTT, min. raising pre-flop is horrible. In the later stages though, where most of the players at the table are shortstacked, min. raises aren't horrible.
I don't see the point in doing that early on, if your going to raise may as well make it 3-4xbb to at least have some control later on on the hand.

The 3rd option here is proven. I've seen it. I guess they don't want to scare everyone out of the pot with an early position big raise so they do it hoping for a reraise. Then, of course, having secured something of a pot, they can move all in with their AA...

I guess there maybe some merit in this line of thinking.

i'm the type of person who would raise double the blinds
i don't like telling, but not like we would play together on any sites, i don't play party anymore anyways
i raise double the blinds when i have low pckts
reason is because i want to keep everyone in the pot but have everyone call so the pot is a bit bigger, if i hit i stil have other players and play through it or i fold, dont like to get too agressive with low pckts
i raise double the blinds when i have a Ace suited, i don't know why, but its just a drawing hand for me, i hate the weak ace, too many bad plays wth them... i could raise it bigger and isolate a heads up, but then again, i only play it for the flush draw
umm what else reasons do i raise with them?
i know... when everyone folds to me and i have AA under the gun, i would raise it double and hope someone would re-raise the small raise
(i know, its a bad play when it doesn't work)
when i have a big hand the table is all folded, i don't wanan raise so much, i still want action, i would minium raise
anyways thats all i can think of
if the plays work, ur a genius, if not then ur a horrible player
people like gus hansen who play any 2 cards and gets lucky is considered a lucky bastard, but its fun to watch him, not taking anything away from him, hes a good player also... knows whats hes doing, but he's sure lucky

In my experience, it's usually a big hand in early position, an amateur player who is really not 100% sure what to do with KTo, or a pot-builder bet.
I know a player who does it all the time. He always bets either 2xBB or 4xBB. He says it makes it more difficult to put him on a hand with the 2xBB raise since he'll do that with suited connectors, low PP's, unsuited paint, etc. His 4xBB is reserved for big hands most of the time, but he'll use it for steals also. It does make him a tough player to read. I have a hard time putting him on hands with this structure.

I typically use this move for varying my play. I may also use it from time to time to encourage weaker hands to call , IE do it with AKs AQs , encourage kj kq q10 hands to call.
If I do do this .... I don't do it all that often , maybe 10-15% of the time... Its almost always from UTG - UTG+3 range pos.
Or I'll do this as a pot builder with suited connectors from any posistion , If I'm playing at a particuliarly passive preflop table.
I also may use this to sniff out who limped with a monster .... perhaps do this from late If I get a strange vibe from an early limper.
