Anyone know about the history of poker up until the official introduction of Texas Hold'em in 1919? I'm trying to do research on it and the only sources I've been able to find are fairly brief -- like these sites:
Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poker
Old school anti-gambling history of poker, apparently: http://epe.lac-bac.gc.ca/100/201/300/jrn_gambling_issues/html/2005/no13/issue13/jgi_13_turner.html
A web site with citations from poker books (books that I'm looking for): http://www.pokertips.org/history/origins.php
More http://www.readybetgo.com/poker/history/history-of-poker-254.html
Yeah, this is a research project, but it's a pretty interesting story.
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

I don't know of great sources for it
But my understanding is that poker was a varient of an older middle eastern game that was played by the culturally varigated citizens of the South.
The full 52-card "railroad bible" deck and the many varients of stud and draw poker are thought to be innovations credited to the 49ers and the idle soliders of the civil war.

Poker: Bets, Bluffs and Bad Beats by A. Alvarez has several early chapters which discusses the history of poker.
Talks about the game being derived from a Persian game called As-Nas and was brought to America by Columbus's sailors. Some fact and some fiction to that according to the author. You should be able to go to a Barnes and Noble and find the book and pull out some information you can use.
Not a bad purchase has some good stories and is a good read.

I just digged in google that the first reminder of poker dates back to 1836 to refer to a game that soldiers played in the West of America.
Poker history is actually full of legends and asumptions. Some say it was all invented in China. However, no one doubts that the real popularity that it has was only to be had in America.
