That Darn Royal Flush

I have to post this story- since it is one of the best and worst experiences I've had at a poker table.

The Date- October 17th, 2001
The City- Las Vegas
The Casino- Monte Carlo
The Game- 6/12 Hold'em

I sat down at an already established 6/12 Hold'em game. I was alone and I just wanted some time to myself to play without my wife over my shoulder. I scanned over the players at the table and became worried about a couple of Arab men speaking in another language to one another. I didn't say anything; I had just sat down and was waiting for the button to come around. Everyone else seemed harmless and especially this older gentleman sitting in the 5 seat (I was in the 7). He was hooked up on oxygen, wore glasses, and had one of those cabby/Irish hats on. Not a Threat, I Thought.

I didn't have a lot of time to play- and the button was going to take a while, so I posted- which I rarely do. I had about 250 in front of me and all I'm thinking is when I'm going to bitch to the dealer about the two Arab guys not speaking English. I didn't even think to look at my cards- just about everyone was mucking until the 5 seat (button) said, "Raise." The small blind folded, then the big blind, and I figured that the button was trying to steal the blinds and my post. I peaked at my hole cards to find a couple of Cowboys. I re-raised, he came back- and I capped it. The flop came; 10, Q, K of hearts. I flopped the top set. The old oxygen guy didn't even move- I didn't think that he could even walk. LOL... I bet, he raised- capped it. Turn card comes K- shit man, I got quads!!! We capped it again; I put the old guy on a flopped flush. The river was another heart- I then thought for sure I'm going to take this guy out! We capped again- while I laughed out loud.

I turned over my quad Cowboys and I laughed when the other players smirked as if I was a jerk - taking money from an old man. This Old, Oxygen, Half Blind, Irishman turned his hole cards over to reveal that he flopped a Royal Heart Flush! I was at first shocked- then became pissed off since the table began laughing. I just lost about 150 to this guy-- I was not laughing! I then asked if there was a Bad Beat Jackpot- the dealer said, "NO- But we have a Progressive for both your hands."

The joke was really on the old oxygen guy- it seemed that just a couple days earlier another player hit a Heart Royal and cashed out for 4K. Since, the hearts just hit, he only got $1,200- well that plus my $150. The real good part is that it had been about 7 weeks since the last quad K's had hit- I walked away with $2,400!

I learned a lot on that hand- especially not to judge a book by its cover. This old guy was either dead, or has had a royal several times in his probably 110 years of life. I was so excited with my hand, I never thought of the only hand out there that could have beat me. If I'm ever in that situation again, I'll at least look up ay the Progressive or Bad Beat Payout's before I start re-raising on my """Unbeatable Hand"""
