On the River - Better off doing a Blocking Bet?

Posted Mon May 01, 2006 3:03 pm GMT by Dat_Dude
Villain plays a lot of hands and is pretty tricky overall. Has made continuation bets and showed down some big hands and some really solid bluffs when he smells weakness. In this hand, I really wasn't sure to think.

PokerStars Game #4793481138: Hold'em No Limit ($0.10/$0.25) - 2006/04/30 - 18:34:45 (ET)

ligonia: folds
Diesel_IA: calls $1.50
*** FLOP *** Eight of DiamondsFour of DiamondsSeven of Hearts
Diesel_IA: checks
JACKSINHOLE: bets $2
Diesel_IA: raises $4 to $6
JACKSINHOLE: calls $4 The call is interesting. Flush draw maybe?
*** TURN *** Eight of DiamondsFour of DiamondsSeven of Hearts Three of Hearts
Diesel_IA: bets $5
JACKSINHOLE: calls $5
*** RIVER *** Eight of DiamondsFour of DiamondsSeven of HeartsThree of Hearts Ace of Spades
Diesel_IA: ????

Now, I really don't know what to make of this hand at this point. I realize I have 4th pair, but it could be good still if he was on a draw.

The question is, am I better off making a small, blocking bet on the river (say, $4)? If villain was on a flush draw and missed, he will likely fold. If he has 8's or 7's, he will call and I am beat either way. Now, if I check, this screams weakness and I am am giving the play back to him.

What do you do on the river?

I think your beat and have been for the entire hand. I would say villian is most likely on a PP. You might still be able to get the hand with a large bet here but doubtful.

Gotta say that I really don't like how you played this hand.

If you're going to check/raise the flop you gotta go bigger... at least $8. Even with 2 overs he is going to call.

You're lead on the turn also looks weak. Looks like it says you want to play a small pot because you don't have the best hand. $5 into a pot that is almost $15 doesn't look strong and if you say he is a guy that plays back when he smells weakness, I'm surprised you didn't get re-raised.

With the ace on the river, I check/fold. Unless you are planning on firing out $20 and making him fold a better hand, lay it down.

I think a better line would have been check/call the flop then either lead big on a no-scary turn or check/raise big and end this pot.

I am not a huge fan of how I played it either. The reason I only popped him up $4 on the flop, because technically a call on pot odds isn't justified. If he had two overs and a flush draw, it leaves him with 15 outs and that gives him about 3.2/1 against catching his cards, and the pot is only offering him 2.4/1. I realize it isn't ENOUGH of a difference now and if I plan to do this in the future, I will bump it up more.
