I'm such an omaha donk...Was this the smart play?

Playing $1/2 PL omaha and I get dealt

K Club Q Club 5 Diamond 3 Diamond

I was in the BB and everyone folded but the SB who limped in.

The flop comes out

5 Heart 3 Club J Heart

After a few re raises I put him all-in

I caught the 3 Spade on the turn and the K of Spade on the river.
Was this a stupid push on my part? I figured for a limper he didnt hit a set on the flop. He may have had a higher 2 pair however, but I just figured him for a flush draw. I think 2 pair on the flop is statistically ahead of a flush draw in omaha as it would be in hold em, correct?
Did I get my money in with the best hand or did I suckout by pushing in with bottom two pair and a backdoor flush draw?

Also, what kind of hand did he have? he mucked it and I'm assuming it was a missed heart draw.

Go easy on me, I'm a stud and hold em player usually :D

well i wouldnt play bottom 2 pair so aggresive,
there is a lot of hands he can have that are already ahead or has draws that can beat u , and just becouse he limped doesnt mean he doesnt have a playable hand

I would never play bottom 2 pair in such a way. Against raises and re-raises, you may be facing not only a flush draw, but an overpair or J-redraw. I may bet and try to take the pot with your hand, but if I hit any resistance, I'd be done.

Just because someone limped in doesn't mean they can't have JJ in the hole. At $200 PLO, a lot of limping is still quite common.

And if he had JUST a flush draw, yes you would be ahead with two pair. But he could have any number of redraws that could make you a slight to significant dog.

Thankyou for the tips guys.
I think i'm going to try to add omaha to my game to go along with my stud and HoldEm skills.

Gotta start reading! :D

Unfortunately there is not a lot of good literature on Omaha out there. Both Lyle Berman's section in SS2 and TJ Cloutier's book give you a picture of the fundamentals, but Omaha really just requires a lot of experience, patience, and frustration.

Some words on starting hand selection:

1. Remember that you have 6 possible combinations of hole cards, and the more of them that work together, the better. 8765 is better than AK65 for this reason, unless your ace and king were double-suited.
2. Pairs are good, but you need to be careful with pairs lower than 10's, which can make you bankroll-busting second sets. Double pairs are also great, because you will flop a set almost 1/4 of the time when you hold this fabulous combination.
3. 3 connectors and a suited Ace give you a lot of flops you can hit. I love a hand like A Heart 8 Heart 7 Spade 6 Spade because it allows you to hit many straights, and ace-high flush, and a straight flush.
4. A cardinal rule of Omaha: You must absolutely not raise with a big pair from early position, because there simply isn't enough in the pot to make people pay, and you hate to be out of position with a big pair. Also, don't raise with a "naked" AA or KK (ie a hand with AA or KK that has nothing else going for it), because you will usually not hit a set, and you hate to get trapped in a big pot with just an overpair.

A few words on post-flop plays:

1. Remember that the nuts come up in Omaha much more frequently than in Hold'em. For this reason, you usually want to be sure your draws are to the nuts. Even the K-high flush gets beat by the A-high flush more times than you'd believe possible. You don't want to play the low end of straught draws or baby flush draws in this game.
2. Remember the power of redraws. I once flopped top two pair, a wrap, a straight draw, and a nut flush draw. This is an AWESOME hand and should be played incredibly strongly. Also, you may occasionally have to fold something like a naked nut-flush draw if there is a lot of action, but with a re-draw, you can frequently give more action.
3. Beware hands like two pair or bottom sets, because players with big draws or people who slowplay big sets can put a tremendous hurt on you. Playing these hands well will come with experience.

Also remember... position, position, POSITION. Position is probably more crucial in Omaha than in any other form of Poker.

Awesome.
Thank you so much for all that info!
I really really appreciate it. I have dabbled in Omaha for some time now, and am very excited to learn more about the game.
Thanks a bunch 8)
