Set down strict rules to your playing and keep a journal of your actions.

And if you are really worried and feel out of control, tell someone and ask them to help you out.

I know discussions on compulsive gambling isn't popular amongst 'students of the game', but hey...it happens, and it is a powerful sort of addiction and it is definitively 'bad poker' at its absolutely worst and therefore should be considered a worthy addition to any other form of 'strategy' discussion.

Now, if you _think_ you may have a problem and you want to resolve it on your own, you'll likely require some strong will and the ability to be honest. Don't lie to yourself, and don't lie to others.

You got the ability to think, you know where your money is going and most likely you know if you're doing a stupid thing...so don't.

Keep it real and keep it down to earth.

That right there is some great advice. Although "quit gambling" certainly is to the point.

Do you mean you can't stay away from the blackjack tables on Party or something?

For some reason, I don't call poker gambling. Wink

just remember to LEARN from your actions. I used to have a serious problem....

like the time i lose 300$ at blackjack ..... so what did I do? I went to the ATM and emptied my entire bank account and put it all on one hand of blackjack.....and i won lol. Man , im totally a gambler at heart , im just to smart and know its stupid Sad

anyway , when i lost 750$ in one night at blackjack after JUST getting a two week paycheck with rent coming in two weeks ..... yea i quickly relized what i did was fukcing stupid and I have since given up blackjack entirly. In fact the only time i allow myself to gamble other then poker , is if im in las vegas and looking to have a good time. and even then i set limits VERY low , and even then i prefere to go play poker.

Unless you know what the cards are going to be, it's gambling.

In a sense you do...you don't know the specific card this time but you know the percentage for all of the cards on any street/flop and can use that longterm to remove the gambling from poker. Same for the percentage you attribute to someone folding to your bluff...you could be wrong, but it's not gambling; you would just be bad at poker.

I used to use this line of reasoning myself. I recently started reading Sklansky's Small Stakes Hold 'Em and, not that I see everything he says as fact, he really destroys this line of thinking. You can use skill to minimize it to an extent, but it's absolutely gambling.

It's a proven fact that flushing $20 bills down the toilet has more entertainment value (and is cheaper) than Party blackjack.

Seriously, try it.

I like to think of it as a calculated risk. There's still a risk of losing your money, but if you know what you're doing, your edge is better than blackjack (unless you can count cards really, really well).

I would suggest you set limits for yourself and stick by them. Put a stop loss and/or a time limit on your sessions. If you lose $X you're done for the day/night. At X o'clock, you're stopping no matter where you are moneywise. A combination of the two would be best such as, if you lose $X or it's X o'clock, whichever comes first, then stop playing.

Every time I go to a casino to play poker, I have both of these in place. No matter how much I'm winning, I stop at 4am. If I lose $350 I'm done. Whichever comes first. Hopefully, it's 4am. Wink

And to add something serious to the conversation:

Poker and table games like Blackjack are different in that with the table games, the house always has an edge. You have to get considerably lucky over a period of time to turn a profit. With poker, depending on your skill and the skill of the other players at the table, your edge can be greatly increased thus reducing your need to get quite as consistantly lucky. However, every time you sit down at a poker table, there is an element of chance. I think we can all agree on that? You're putting money on chance the entire time you play poker. It doesn't matter what your chances are. Whether you are 95% to win a hand or a 8-1 dog, there is an element of chance.

Poker is gambling, plain and simple. It can be a "smarter" way to gamble if you want to look at it that way, but it's still gambling.

You're completely right, every time you sit at a table, you're gambling. But if you think long term for poker, you can ignore that aspect of it. All you are gambling on is the chance that you either will hit a bad enough streak that your bankroll won't be able to handle it or something comes up in your life and you can't get back to the tables (or the ahole politicians making onling poker illegal).

I think the point is even if its a 60% chance to win , its still a chance , and the fact that there is no certainty - is why its gambling.

Exactly.

Say someone was on a street corner with a 100 sided die (i don't know, he used to play D&D or something) and was offering people a bet for $100 that required them to roll anything 6-100 to win. If you roll 1-5 you lose $100.

Now you'd be stupid not to give it a chance if you had a spare $100. and you would want to hurry up because this dude is gonna be broke soon. However, do you not agree that this is still a gamble? You are going to win this guy's money 95% of the time, but you're playing a game, with an element of chance, for stakes. That, my friend, is gambling.

Man, I come up with some long-winded-ass posts while I'm at work.
