Pre Flop Strategy in Tournaments |

I'm kinda new to holdem and real new to holdem online.
I've been playing in a few tournaments at partypoker.com both limit and no limit.
Since I'm new, I've generally taken a very conservative approach to my pre flop cards only to realize I should have stayed after seeing the pre flop.
So, assuming the idea is to WIN the tournament, what cards do you look for pre flop with a full table, half table, and 3 or less players?
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

Sounds like you're already on the right track...
Tournement play is much different than ring-game play. The object of the game is survival. Don't be discouraged when you see that your cards would hae matched up with the board when all is said and done.
You want to play tight as a rock until there are only a few (maybe 3 out of a 10 table tourney), and only then start to open up a bit.
I've found that many players only play to place in the money. There are alot of chips to be made right before the tourney starts to pay off, as many players are playing overly tight and only want to hit that final table and aren't thinking of the big picture. If you want to WIN, roll right over these players. They won't commit their stack, and its easy to run right over them. If they do start to call or raise your bets, be afraid (especially if you've been playing tight all tourney and start opening up, because they almost certainly have something at this point)
Right before the final table, or before people start to place in the money is a very good time to get aggresive, especially if the blinds are very big and you can steal often. I open up around this time, assuming I'll be at the final table and will need some chips to work with if I'm going to place well (atleast 3rd or better, where the money is)
I hope that helps.
