1. how did you find out about poker and when.
It depends, I had heard about poker years and years ago, but I think I properly discovered it around 1999-2000 when I watched a show in england called Late Night Poker. This was when I first grasped the concept of Texas Hold'em and was quite interested. I only watched it on the TV and maybe played a few hands of 5 card draw when we would play cards with friends.
2. how long have you been playing and why do you continue to play
I have been playing for around 2 years now on the Internet. This is when I first started getting into it properly and playing reguarly. I continue to play because I enjoy the game just as much now as I did when I first started. The excitement, The challenge, the maths involved, the psychology and also the money. These all keep me interested.
3. with poker getting so popular how would you like to see the fate of poker proceed. exploding with popularity or with the television 'fad' side of things slowly dieing down. why.
I would like to see poker continue to rise in popularity. It's only going to help the game. the game needs to continue to evolve and stay fresh. The more players that play are also going to mean more bad players in the field, which the good players can take advantage of.

Ermmm, Not sure how you want this answered.
The good about the Internet - Cheaper rake, players 24 hours a day, many players, more choice, no travelling
the bad about the internet - Addictive and unsociable online and offline!
The good about casinos - a good laugh, personalities, usually good service and food/drink up against people you can see
The bad - Not a lot of table choice, game choice, getting back at night, House games.

We've had a few highly spirited discussions on the last of your interview topics. I'll send you a link to my favorite--one I started and in which I made observations with which no one agreed. You might enjoy it, and you would certainly find ideas on your topic which you could explore with the authors.

1. how did you find out about poker and when?
My sister taught me how to play. I played nickle/dime growing up. Once I hit my teen years I started playing larger stakes home games. Usually $.50/$1 on any game from 7stud, 3 card guts, 5 draw, 5 stud and about any variation of poker you can find.
2. how long have you been playing and why do you continue to play?
I am 37 now so you figure serious poker for about 18 years. I play for the love of the game. Poker is a competition that puts mind against mind and man against man more in a battle of minds and wits then a battle of physical strength.
3. with poker getting so popular how would you like to see the fate of poker proceed. exploding with popularity or with the television 'fad' side of things slowly dieing down. why?
Keep it exploding. We have to have a fresh stocking of fish somehow.
4. thoughts on internet VS casinos - the good the bad the ugly?
The internet does attract several fish who just want to make money playing poker. What they really end up doing is feeding us bigger fishes and sharks and make it easier for us to maintain a healthy bankroll.
Onther good aspect of online poker, the fact that there is a game going 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. Anytime of the day or night you can log on and find a game going for any stakes and for any variation of poker. You got to love playing that British bloke who should be in bed right now but instede chooses to donate to your bankroll building party.
B&M casinos are streaming with fish as well. Several of the B&M players at my local casino(s) are people who see the game played on TV and want to play like they are at the final table of the WSOP. They play any two cards. Not a bad thing if you capatalize and make them pay to play that "goodbuddy" (104o) VS your KQs or AJo.
Both have good and bad but to me both are wonderful places to play poker.

1. My mates and i, now work all over the place, and because of this we don't keep in touch as much as i would of liked. Therefore I started a poker night around my house. Although i had spent alot of time in the casino's, i had never played poker as the stakes were too steep. We started off by playing five card stud. (i made the rules up as i went along!). one day i watch a bit of texas hold'em on tv and think "hey-that looks like fun" and decide to teach the boys that instead. However that didn't come without a few problems. when i first anounced we were playing a different game, nobody liked it. my fight was made harder when i forgot the name of the game and how many cards were to be dealt on the flop. looking back now- we always played no limit, never pot limit or fixed.
2 I've been gambling for years. it started of when i was payed to play rugby. i would take it all to the casino on a saturday night and have ALOT of fun. but this was only blackjack, slots, or roulette. i then moved on to sports betting. however it wasn't until i read david stansky's phycology of poker (excuse the spelling), that i learnt i only wanted to gamble my money when i had "the edge". of course unlike most other types of gambling, poker gives you that feature (if you play it right). now i hardly ever gamble on anything else.
3 poker is here to stay. i would like to develop my game alot more and feel i've discovered the game at the right time. (as 90% of my poker is played online)
4 i find it easier to play in the casino as i spend a lot of time studying the other players and their body language. however online is sooooo much more convienient and the table limits are cheaper. I also now never drink if i'm gambling, so when the casino used to be a good excuse for a few beers, now-a-days i don't even bother.
good luck with your project.

1. My dad use to have weekly homegames where the group of guys would come to my house, and have a game in the kitchen. One of the guys, I'm proud to say, was Daniel Negreanu. Unfortunately, I was too young to completely understand the game, and obviously DN wasn't famous yet. So yeah, I found out about poker by watching my dad's homegame.
2. I have been playing for 3 years. I continue to play because I love the game in general. It's a game of witts, and plenty of skill. Poker can never be mastered, and you can always learn new things. I've also won a nice amount of money from playing it.
3. I'd like to see poker continue its popularity. That means more fish to win money from. 8)
4. Never played in a casino as I'm a bit too young

1. how did you find out about poker and when.
My first game was when I was 4 or 5. I played with my sister and a couple of the kids in the neighborhood. We played for halloween candy.
2. how long have you been playing and why do you continue to play
See above. However, I've been playing "seriously" (for money) since 2000, but not regularly until we went to the beach in the summer of 2002. I continue to play because I can't get enough of the game. It's challenging, tests your mental skills and requires a great deal of patience and discipline. I'm addicted.
3. with poker getting so popular how would you like to see the fate of poker proceed. exploding with popularity or with the television 'fad' side of things slowly dieing down. why.
I kind of like the boom. It supplies me with an endless number of inexperienced players, i.e. more money to be made
4. thoughts on internet VS casinos - the good the bad the ugly.
I prefer casino play, but it's a trip to get there. Online gives me the option to play more frequently when there isn't a local game and I cannot make the 5+ hour trip to the casino. Poker is like anything else, if you want to be good at it, you have to practice.
I think online play is tougher because you lose a lot of the physical aspects of the game such as tells. Additionally, you see more hands per hour online, so a "bad" session can be much more costly. On the other hand, you can play for much lower stakes online allowing new players who are just learning to do so without breaking the bank.

"The Cincinnati Kid." I don't remember how old I was when I saw it.
| kainARGH wrote: | | 2. how long have you been playing and why do you continue to play |
I've played a long time, probably since college. I continue to play because I have a mental disorder.

It doesn't really matter to me, although the number of television shows could use a real paring. I can honestly say I haven't watched a poker TV show in nearly a year.

Internet poker is probably the worst idea ever. What they've done is taken an already antisocial activity and completely removed any remaining humanity from it. There's at least a modicum of decorum in the casino regardless that the underlying sentiment remains the same.

1. I had heard of and played a little Draw, 5- and 7-Card Stud since I was about 10. However, the first time I learned of professional Poker and Hold'em in particular was the broadcast of the 2003 WSOP. That opened up an entirely new world to me. Since then, I've been fascinated by the game.
2. I've been playing "seriously" since about December of '04. Obviously I'd played a bit before then (probably since about June of '04), but that was my first trip to casino to spend any more than $10 on Poker in any one sitting. I continue to play because I've found it's a way to make money, and I enjoy the competition of the game. Also, I harbor pipe dreams of winning the big tournaments out there and living on easy street after a multi-million dollar victory, retiring to play Poker on the tour just for fun.
3. I'd like to see it taken more seriously, with tournaments having better commentary and showing more hands that reveal the "nuts and bolts" of Poker. I hate the crap they show on TV where no one has more than 10 BB's, and any raise is immediately met with an all-in.
4. Casinos and live Poker are a thousand times better than the internet. One, because of the social aspect. Two, because it adds a physical aspect to gauging players. And three, it's just more fun to play with real chips. Well and four, in general it's much easier.

Well, my sister was an avid cheater in any game when we were kids. I lost a lot of candy that day. I didn't play any poker with her again until about a year and a half ago. Sadly, I still watch her like a hawk even though she's probably outgrown that phase.
