Phil Hellmuth Cannot Dodge Bullets

Posted Mon May 29, 2006 7:46 pm GMT by xDiamond_CutteRx
I just watched that clip again, and that was one of the easiest lay downs in the history of Poker. Let's see. You have an old man who min-raises after showing down nothing but high pairs and AK. Then he goes into a "nervous" speech on a flop of A44, looking nothing but comfortable. The he overbets huge on the turn. Call me crazy, but what in the hell could he have but AK, AA, or 44? Best Phil can hope for is a tie. It doesn't take a 9-time bracelet winner to read that chump or make that fold.

Anyone agree/disagree this was not an incredible play of any kind?

I thought is was an impressive laydown. I think it's easy to say otherwise when we see the aces on TV.

I agree though that there wasn't much he could be.

But that dialogue.... "You check to ME? Ok I check to you." That's the smug assuredness of a man who likes his hand. Granted, an amateur couldn't make that laydown, but it doesn't take a great player either.

I think the fact that he was playing against Phil Hellmuth would be a factor for that dialogue. Phil seems to start a lot of chat at the table.

I agree that it wasn't the best laydown ever or anything. I just found it impressive.

I wouldn't call it a great lay down or dodging bullets. What I would call it is a bad play by the other player. This hand would have been a prime one to slow play and suck the hell out of Hellmuths chips. Had the other player slow played we would all here some foul talk coming from Phil.

I was watching High stakes last night, and I must say i loved it when jennifer Harmen played 8,2 against phils queens and rivered a 10 high straight. I laughed so hard, and being the baby that Phil is he had to go cry about it. Laughing

Yeah, I commented about that hand in one of the other HSP threads. He had NO BUSINESS getting upset about that. The only one he could be upset with is himself for playing that hand so passively. He waited until she had a made hand to make a move. He seems to get less and less effective every time we see him (besides the Tournament of Champions, which he shouldn't have been playing in the first place).

What did Phil have again Diamond? I remember the situation, but I don't remember what the hands were.

I am pretty sure he had AK.

yeah he had A-K

AA was pretty much the only thinkable hand that would beat him. or pocket 44's

i thought it was an alright laydown

what i really liked though was the call he made with K high against that southern hick guy in the tournament of champions 2005 final table. final 3 players i think... with two pair and a straight draw out there on the board

Hellmuth actually folded on the turn, where it went check-check on the flop.

The board was A44 Q, so now he couldn't beat QQ or AQ either.

Best call I have ever heard about is Stu Ungar calling a guy with ten high and winning.

I mean ace and king high is pretty good, atleast with those you have some sort of showdown value...you can beat pure bluffs.

With ten high you have to peg your opponent on a specific hand and sniff out why your opponent has just that hand, you can't call just because you sense weakness.

The funny part was, if i remember correctly- the board was such that stus hand could litterally only beat 3 possible hands. Like say he had 108 and he could only beat a 107 106 or 67. something like that.

What made it even more funny was when hearing the story your hearing it from the guy stu called......not stu. So you know its true and you know it was absolutly incredible Razz

I read that in Hellmuth's book and I was amazed. He could only beat 3 hands, which I think were broken straight draws. His opponent also never played against Stuey again, can't blame him either.

I could take Stu.
