ESPN To Televise WSOP Final Table LIVE on PPV

Posted Tue May 30, 2006 11:35 am GMT by Dat_Dude
I apologize for not having a link for this information. I am in the process of looking for it.

I work for a Cable Company/ISP, and our Marketing department received a letter from ESPN stating that this year they will be broadcasting the Final Table of the World Series of Poker live and will be available on Pay Per View.

I will post more details when I get them.

Anyone else just LOVE this idea? This way you get to see all the hands that were raised & reraised where there was no action and will really capture the reality of Final Table poker. The general public get the impression from the WPT and even some in the WSOP that the Final tables are just All-In crapshoots.

Thoughts?

WSOP 2006 begins on June 25th. I'm really looking forward to it, and Dat_Dude, that's awesome - thanks for the info.

Main Event isn't scheduled until the very early part of August I think, and FT won't be until mid-August (It's about a 12-day affair total this year).

This is absolutely awsome for two reasons.

First, I remember hearing on the news that an Australian won the 2005 WSOP when it was played. Therefore a lot of the drama was missing when I eventually got to see the televised tourny (even though it was still a fantastic tournament.

Second, I agree with Dude's observation about seeing every hand. This will be riviting.

Clearly they won't be showing the pocket cams, though. That could end up being a long and boring day. Anyone out there ever seen a tournament live? How is it to watch play when you can't see the cards?

It's fun and upsetting at the same time. Without seeing the hole cards, it allows you to actively put players on hands and really sort of "play along" with the action. The downside is that it's harder to follow along and you can't see players mucked hands etc..

Personally I think I like seeing the hole cards better.

Yeah, this isn't nearly going to be as cool as you might initially think. People will point to the Turning Stone tournament where they showed every hand, but it wasn't live and you could see the hole cards. They can't use the cameras, because it is a live tournament. So there's going to be a LOT of raise, fold around, win the blinds poker where you have no idea what anyone was holding. Now, I'm not saying that I like the "all-in every hand" type broadcasts, but this is going to be just as awful at the other end of the spectrum.

Didn't the final table play out for 16 or 18 hours last year?

Yeah, some crazy amount of time like that.

They could show the hole cards if they showed the tournament in delay, couldn't they?

Oh, it would have to be much more than that, probably on the order of 10-15 minutes.

Even then you're going to get complaints, especially from those guys who don't like showing their cards at all, like Seidel.

I can't imagine this would go over well at all.
