bet the flop of course, but what action to take on the turn? Especially if you get multiple callers. At what point do you go into check-call mode - if ever?

Personally I'd prefer a check-raise on the flop to buy yourself some protection. The problem from EP is that you get only a little information about people calling one small bet. if you could check and get LP to bet though, you get a lot more information, since only more quality hands will call two bets on the flop.
I'd just go ahead and check because of your poor position. If someone in EP bets and they get a few callers, or especially if they face a raise, I would just dump your hand. If it gets checked to the button, I would raise to protect your hand and gain information. If everyone checks, then bet out on the turn.

I agree, with that many people in the pot, you are likely to not have the best hand right now. Check/raise or check/fold.

Very good advice.

How's the suits on the flop? That's pretty important, esp if someone bets and there are callers. Straight-wise this is a bloody good flop for a weak top pair.

Even if no one had a strong draw (flush or straight) against you, I don't think its worth going to the river to find out somebody has KT. If the situation is +EV, I don't think you are losing much money playing cautiously in these situations. But I agree that the suits on the flop are important. 2 to a suit and I'm even more likely to dump it.

I prefere to bet the flop. It wasn't mentioned but these were micro stakes. the fishie fishie fish stakes. Generally at these stakes If i bet the flop and someone raises I fold. They tell me the str of their hand.
