-------

Not sure if I could've played this any differently. I made a large reraise preflop to try to isolate the original raiser, unfortunately the person to my left decides to come along for the ride, so I don't have position.

Flop is good, I make a large raise (again trying to isolate, but I'm happy to take the pot there and then - I certainly don't want to see an ace). CO calls (putting himself all in) as does UTG.

On the turn CO pushes and I call. I'm fairly sure he has AJ - even if I thought I was behind I would probably call anyway due to the size of the pot.

Any thoughts?

Very well played! UTG should have a decent hand like AJ or QQ and you're not worried about the super shortie obviously.

Very well played in my opinion... Smile

Turns out the villain had JJ, for a set. (CO had pocket 6s).
Ah well, I'm just pleased I didn't do anything wrong (although this wasn't my preferred way to start a session.)

I'd just posted a related thread in the Basic Theory section http://www.texasholdem-poker.com/forum/t17645/playing-top-pair-with-no-improvement raising the issue of playing a pocket overpair at the river. Anyone with specific insights on the more general case is invited to reply there.

BTW: This is my first post in Advanced Theory. Where is the line between Basic and Advanced? For that matter, where is the line between genius and insanity, good and evil, ugly and beautiful, good and bad? I wax philosophical--my students are taking a database exam and think I'm up here composing important academic insights for the benefit of all mankind. Perhaps I am in my own small way.
