the $1348 diamond

Last night, I was playing in a local NL game, in North LV, with a single $2 blind (dont bother asking why it's only a single blind, it really doesn't matter in this game, but yes it's still a stupid rule).

Speedway Casino, for anyone bold (stupid?) enough to venture there.

There's no cap on the buy-in, and cash plays.
I pretty much know everyone's playing style, and I can and will outplay and out bankroll everyone there an honest 90-95% of the time I play there; the only problem being it's rare they have games anymore.

I was getting rivered and sucked out on early on, I started with $840 and was down to about $400, before going on a mini-rush and getting back in black and running it up to a little over $900, until the key hand of the night came-

I'm leader in cash/chips, having everyone covered, with the next highest having about $750-$850. The game is loose, as it always is, tons of people seeing raised flops, until a big bet comes out then everyone typically folds

Well I'm on the button, with 6 Club 7 Club
The next highest chipleader other than me, UTG+1, raises makes it $22 & everyone folds. I call, the single blind then folds.
Flop- 5 Diamond 6 Diamond 6 Heart
The initial raiser is a flake and comes out betting $200, immediately after seeing the flop. $200??! I only see 2 or 3 hands he could possibly have- a high pocket pair, or a diamond AK- No way in hell he has pocket 5's, as he'd definitely put out a pot builder bet and make his move on the river, same thing if he held the 6. Unlike most players who would bet out anyone on a flush draw, he lets you draw for cheap then he'll bet on the river, whether you hit your draw or not, leaving himself then vulnerable :D

So he bet $200 into a $46 pot, and I know I have him killed. From past history of playing with this guy, I know he's not gonna lay down this hand, regardless of what I do. So I do what I have to do, the reason I'm sitting down playing in the first place. All In. He thinks about it for about $15 seconds, then calls. I turn up my 3 sixes, he doesn't look happy, then turns over his hand- J Diamond 8 Diamond Shocked Shocked Shocked
He asks the dealer for a diamond, I say to pair the board, and I get that sinking feeling when the turn comes out- 4 Diamond
No help from the river, the 3 Club
From my all in raise, including the $200 call, the dealer counted him down and took $651 from my stack, leaving me with next to nothing.

Unf.cking real.
I've seen tons of bad play in my life, but this is just atrocious. Betting $200 into a $46 pot, with a Jack-high. With a pair on board no less, and still deliberately betting, and then calling, ALL HIS MONEY, to CHASE...

Hey, I love to chase also, and sometimes the rewards are great, but I don't volunteer a bet four times the pot size, when I'm not even there yet. He sees nothing wrong with his play, and usually you get rewarded when he does this type of thing.

so cry me a river Very Mad

Sorry can I share an old story of a friend of mine.

This was back when we were kinda new to no limit and poker in general. Both of us, my friend and I were on this incredible loseing streek at the bicycle. I lost about 1500$ 2-3 hundred at a time with pocket kings getting cracked 8 times. Either all in pre and an under pair calls or im all in on the turn and a flush draw calls ect.

So my friend - who was playing as scared money really - sits down at 500$ min buy in NL. Were people with a few thousand at the table which I believe was no max buy in - not sure. When the following hand comes up.

Him AA
other guy 65o

Friend raises to about 50$ blinds 5-10$ I think.
maybe 2 other callers.

Flop 8910

My fruiend being just scared money - goes all in. This guy with like 4000$ in front of him - as hes putting the money in to call - says " I gotta play my rush man " calls the 450$ ish raise.

turn 6 river 6 lol.

I mean I could tell hundreds of bad beat stories just like the next poker player can, but this one forever sticks out. Your story of someone calling a huge raise with a rediculous draw made me wanna share this one.

Its a strange play, sure. But, he probably figured he could force you off a better hand that didn't contain a 6 by playing the way he did. The key thing for me is what did he put you on that you would call $22 cold preflop? Probably a small pair or a suited commector of some kind (if he has been paying attention to how you play). So, he puts out a bet that he wants you to fold too which you most likely would with anything other than a 6 or a str8 flush draw. He gets unlucky that you hold what you do. Now to the math:

After you call his raise and put him all in, there is roughly $900 in the pot for him to call $450. So, let's call it 2-1 or around there. Unfortunaltely for you, with two cards to come (him assuming of course that you don't hold 55 or 65 and that you wouldn't push with just higher diamonds), he is 26% to hit his hand and win. I am NOT saying that he made the right play...but the odds are such that it was only a marginally bad call on his part (getting 2-1 when he needed 3-1 for 0 EV) and then he got lucky. Also, if he puts you on a pair over 6's but not over Jacks (which is reasonable), then he is 60/40 to win. Even if he puts you on an overpair to his Jacks (unlikely since you flay called his preflop raise with the possible exception of QQ), he is 68/32 dog.

Again, I am not saying that his play was good or anything like that. But, considering the board and what he held, I think it is a plausible play on his part to think he has 9 or 12 clean outs to win. And, there are a ton of players out there who will call off all of their money on flush draws getting only 2-1.
