High Stakes Poker Season 2

This season looks way better than the first season, which was pretty damn good. Mike the mouth is hilarious, and the poker is excellent too. The Grinder completely owns that doctor amateur guy on one hand, it's great. Check it out guys

Tivo ftw!

What I watched of it was pretty good. So good poker being played, and yes, the amateur is getting pounded

You can download the torrent here. I'm pretty sure this guy will be doing every episode as they come.

I just updated my service, and now get the channel this is on.

A couple of times, they ran board cards twice, and the guys ended up chopping.

I'm wondering what the benefit is if one guy's a pretty good favorite, like when Farha had Matusow AA to TT.

I guess I understand reducing the variance, but if Farha wins both boards, what does he gain? Seems like the downside (losing half the pot some of the time) is greater than the upside.

There is no downside. There is no upside. It's the exact same odds, despite when it seems counter intuitive.

Very simply:

Run once as 80% favorite (10s vs As)= 80% win or 20% lose

Run same twice= 64% aces win pot (.8x.8)
4% 10s win pot (.2x.2)
32% split pot (.8x.2) + (.8x.2)

When you are playing for your entire stack, even if you are a favorite, you may prefer to limit your losses. The chances of losing twice as a favorite is much smaller. You give up a chance to double, but heck, w/ 100k on the line, give up 16% odds to win might be worth driving down the chance to lose to near zero.

What I was wondering, since they dont reshuffle, is it always to the underdogs benefit? Since they need to catch cards, and they get 10 cards to get there, are they really gaining more of an advantage than the favorite is? They need to improve, so they want to go deeper into the deck to catch. The favorite would prefer to end it without any cards. I havent really worked through the numbers, just something I was thinking about.

The only time the odds seem to be different is with draws (flushes hitting), but that gets negated by having the multiple shots at the kitty. It's really not that big a deal either way, and seems more of a chance to show off just how superstitious you really are.

Live @ the Bike lets you see PLENTY of multiple runnings at things... It's pretty common at levels even as low as 500nl. That's kind of odd for people like me who play up to similar levels and don't even consider it.

If you are talking 4 to the flush after the flop, then it wouldnt be that big of a difference because you are only getting more 2 cards.

However, set vs set preflop, you get to go through a quarter of the deck to find one out. It just SEEMS like it favors the underdog a TINY bit.

I am not sure what you meant by the odds being "different". It should never materially change the expected value, only change the range of possible outcomes and lower the risk for both of losing everything.

I'm just saying that if it "hits" the flush or random draw, the second running is almost a right off - very similar to what you're saying with the underset. I realize it changes nothing (really) but it's fun to be superstitious for no reason.
