100NL hand

Posted Thu Jun 15, 2006 5:18 pm GMT by Johny
100NL on PS, my first session at these limits. This only my fourth hand the table so I don't have any reads.

Hero has A Club Q Spade in MP3.

UTG+2 and MP1 limp in. Hero raises to $5. UTG+2 calls, MP1 folds.

Pot: $12.50

Flop: 10 Club Q Diamond A Diamond

Villain checks, Hero bets $8. Villain check-raises minimum.

Hero? We both had around $100 to start the hand.

I think this is one of my worst scenarios to be in. You think you are strong then the Cr and you are not too sure where you are.

You fold (Too weak?)
You call (Show weakness?)
You Raise (Fall into his trap?)

I usually go for a reraise here or a call and raise a non diamond turn.

Edit: If they come over the top or show a lo more strength afterwards then they give away their hand for me.

I've seen this play a lot. Usually check-raising the min means he has a super strong hand. However, it also can be used as an information finder. I like to use it when someone raises preflop and i have position on them with a pp like jacks or queens. After they bet and i min raise, they usually go all in with aces. If they just call it usually means I'm ahead in the hand. With this kind of board though its hard to tell what he could have. He could have a monster like KJ or maybe a set or even 2 pair. Or he might have a draw like diamonds and a K. Or it could just be a set up for a big bluff on the turn if you show weakeness by just calling. With no reads its a tough decision here on what to do. My best bet would be to reraise a lot and hope he doesnt have KJ. At least represent like you have a set of aces and hope thats enough to scare him off.

Pretty tough situation. In this one, I'd be thankful we had position and call.

Re-evaluate on the turn.

____

The other alternative is to re-raise and show strength.. This probably shuts them down and lets us see a cheaper river card.

Up to you.

Hero re-raises to $48. Villain moves all-in.

Pot: ~$155, $45 to call.

I think re-raising on the flop may have been a mistake, because even if I'm beat I've pretty much pot commited myself.

I would have re-raised the flop as well.

so did you call the all-in? what did he have?

It seemed like the min reraise was just to see if you were making a CB. Once he pushed he is definitely proud of his hand. I could see him having AK or AJ, with AA being a possibility.

hey mods: using the new 'skin' the suit pictures don't work (red x)

I am with supa here. Your hand is strong, but there are a ton of turn cards that suck for you and you could already be beaten by a str8 or set. Since we have position, I just call the turn here and hope for a safe card. I think you need to manage pot size with your hand now and play small pot poker. It lets you get away if a truly ugly turn card comes (like the Kd), you don't commit too many chips if you are drawing really thin, and it gives villain the rope he needs to keep firing with a worse hand than you and you win more. If you were out of position, the decision is less clear, but in this specific case I wouldn't commit my stack to this hand in this spot.

Small pot poker good.

You gotta call now. Even if he has a straight or set of tens every time you only stand to lose $10 by calling. If you fold to a OESD semi-bluff you'll lose over $80. If you fold to a gutshot or weaker made hand you'll cost yourself even more. Unless you're over 90% sure he's fo reeeeeeel you gots to call dat.

I felt that there was a good chance I was beat, but I hadn't seen him play so there's a lot of hands he could push with there. I didn't put him on AA or QQ, so if he had KJ or 1010 I was around a 3-1 underdog. I was getting over 3-1, so I wasn't folding.

I called, the turn and the river were no help and he showed 1010.

im a check raise minimum in my head means set. raise on the turn and see what he does. if he re raises is raises an alarm, I doubt he has a set of queens or aces. maybe hes got a set of 10s?

edit: didn't see ur last post.

Thats a tough spot, what I am wondering now that I know what he has is if the mini raise is the right move in his spot. A check raise makes sense to me, but a check minraise?
