Raise pre. Limping with AK UTG is silly. Raising does 2 things, builds a pot, (more value for your hand), and chases out lesser hands and those pesky suited connectors, which in my experience, are AK slayers.

Raise pre-flop, aggression is what makes you money shorthanded.

The flop play is ok and the turn plays itself.

I was actual going to raise this pre-flop to about $0.50 but I wanted to see if someone else would raise pre-flop and then I would re-raise. Didn't work that way though as no one raised pre-flop so I was left just limping into the pot.

After the turn when I saw that K hit I knew that unless this guy had a set I was getting paid in a big way. When I saw the $1 bet from him I figured he was trying to buy this pot. The more I think about it the more I felt I should have just called and not raised at this point. But I also knew 2 pair is a vulnerable hand and not knowing what the other gent was playing I didn't want to give him a chance to draw anymore cards.

I almost always want to kick myself in the butt when I end up limping with an AX hand. Sometimes it works though but most times you end up dumping it.

This really only works if you're playing at a reasonably aggressive table with a lot of hands raised preflop. Of course, none of us can know that from one hand.

I think the real problem here is your approach. You're afraid you won't get paid with your big hands if you raise in EP, so you try to get tricky. If you raised more pots preflop, showed more aggression in these shorthanded games, then eventually people will start to give you that action on your big hands.

But you have to a) QUIT BUYING IN SHORT, b) make good use of position and c) make sure you play well postflop. In these low limit games, most people will only remember that you raised a lot preflop. They won't discern between the times you did it UTG with a monster, and the other 700 times you open-raised in LP with A-rag or a suited connector.

I occassionally limp with hands like AK. I find that if you make these plays occassionally and then are good about not going broke with top pair - and slowing down on river - you can really make it tough for your opponents to know where you are at.

Trickiness has value. If that is more or less here its hard to say...

QFT, it's fine to play AK soft and tricky now and again but don't go nuts when an ace flops figuring you have to be ahead. I'll limp with hands like QQ-AA sometimes as well, but I tell myself when I do that I need to increase the hand range in with me and be more willing to lay it down if I am unsure where I am at.

Raise pre-flop.
Raise his flop bet.

The way it played out, I would have just flat called the turn. There is only a straight draw out there, which I highly doubt he has, so the only "scare" cards are a 5 or 6. Doing that would give force him to either lead the river, then you push, or check/fold.
