Hello all. I just found this site and I'm really glad I did. Lots of useful information.
Anyway I'm a 21 year old college student who will be visiting Vegas for the first time next month. I've been playing poker with a few buddies for a long time, its different though, the stakes are not high and its a different atmosphere. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions, what casinos to visit, etc. and what are the buy-ins.
I live in Colorado and there is a small town in the mountains, Cripple Creek. Cripple Creek is pretty much a gambling town but there is only one poker room in the whole city, but I've never had the nerve to actually sit and play. Would the poker room in cripple creek be a good place to try my luck at before I hit the strip.
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

Hi,
first post at this site so hopefully you find it useful.
Sir_Phobos77 I live in Colorado Springs and I'm a regular (when my wife lets me ) at Cripple Creek. I would definately check out the poker room in the Midnight Rose. It has 2-5 and 5-5 hold-em. Avoid the 5-5 as it can get a bit wild.
If you are a newbie to casino poker then it may look a bit intimidating at first but to be honest its one of the friendliest games I've played at. You will be one of the youngest there at 21 and be prepared to get called "kid" a lot since the average player seems to be 60 and above and carry the obligatory oxygen tank . I survive it and I'm only 6 years older than you so I'm sure you will be fine.
Don't be scared to let the dealer know that you are a newbie. They helped me out a lot when I was learning. It will be a perfect place to perfect your skills before hitting the strip. People at Cripple Creek tend to play for fun and be a lot more tolerant of newbie mistakes.
I'll be over in Vegas next month as well so whether you are on the strip or at Cripple Creek just look out for a drunk Scotsman with (hopefully ) a big stack of chips. I'll help out if I can.

I didnt expect to hear from anyone so close. How often do you make it down to Cripple Creek anyway? I'm finally gonna give it a go this weekend, hopefully the result will be a nice big pile of chips. I did'nt expect a 2-5 game though, I was expecting a 1/2. I'll be sure to keep my out for a drunk scottsman. Are you gonna throw on a kilt if you get loaded enough?

I will probably be up at the weekend to play in the Sunday NL Tournie. I think it starts about 12.30 and is a $40 buy-in.
If you want to try out your tournie skills before Vegas I would recommend it. Your money should last longer at the tournie than at the tables . There is usually about 4-5 tables and its a good laugh. There is always a handle of beginners as well so you won't feel out of place.
There will be plenty of 2-5 or 5-5 action on the side so maybe I'll see you there. Just listen out for a strange accent and that will be me.

P.S. real name is Alan in case you walk round the casino asking for Bumble and get chucked out for being a weirdo

Of course the tourney had to Sunday. I'm gonna go Saturday since I got to work on Sunday. How often are the tourneys held anyway?

Nevermind...I'm sure I'll get to take your money another day
I think they do a Tues and Thursday NL Holdem tournie at about 7pm and a Omaha tournie on a Wed.
I'm not sure though so check on Saturday...the info is on the wall in the poker room.
Good luck tomorrow. Let us know how you get on.

Wow , never had to wait more than 30 mins for a table on a Saturday. What time did you arrive?
I played on Sunday and made a grand total of 5 bucks . Made an early exit from the tournie due to some major suckouts. Nevermind least it didn't cost me money.
I'll probably not be up again till the July 4th weekend. I'll probably be there from Thursday night till Sunday (since the wife is away for the weekend ). Maybe I'll see you there.

hey,
i go to school in denver so i've never made it out to cripple creek. but i was wondering about the tourney's since colorado has that law about max bet as 5 bucks how do the tourney's work?? and what r the pay outs usually. i generally go up to black hawk and central city. i'm back at home now in so i haven't checked it out for awhile. but i was just curious how the rules apply to the tourneys.

Hi,
The $5 max has no bearing on the tourney. You pay your buy in and you gets your chips. No rebuys.
The $60 buy in no limit holdem tourney on Thursday and Sunday are very popular with over 70 people usually.
The payout is usually final ten. I got 4th a few weeks ago and got around $400. 1st was about $750 -800.
Its a fun tourney and I would recommend it. Just get in early as there seem to be more and more every week and they tend to cap the numbers at about 75-80.

i know how you feel. i play in a pretty tough poker room with alot of older people and a few pros outside of louisville, ky. i am always called kid and youngen. i could have some help for you if you want to start playing casino hold em. 1)don't play out of rack-that's like a shark that sees blood. 2)be patient-the cards will eventually come. 3)respect and listen to the older people you play with-basically keep your mouth shut and learn from them.
hope this info helps and kick ass

Since I last posted I've played in cripple creek twice.
The first time I got totally rocked and lost it all, needless to say I was angry.
The second time I finished up about even. The people playing in cripple creek we're surprisingly a lot tougher than those in Vegas.

Well, it's good that you finished even. I think most of us have gotten spanked our first time out.
As for Vegas, go downtown for some real play.
