Fold pre. Seriously.

Posted Fri Jun 23, 2006 5:42 pm GMT by UrAteUp
$0.10 to see the flop and you have two decent suited cards? You want to fold? Sure I could have been beat but with that four flush to the board and no pairs showing....your gonna tell me you wouldn't have went in with this hand and the position I had? Tell me seriously if you have played it the same?

UAU, J3s isn't a decent hand.

You limped in EP with a very weak hand, then called the flop getting around 2.5-1 on your money.

Two fairly big mistakes there.

They were suited?... Embarassed.... Laughing. I can see the errors of my ways here. Looks like I found a hole in my game. Wish this wouldn't have been a cash game because I know I would have laid this down in an SNG.

To add to this, when you say it's only .10 to call, you have to realize that no matter how small the monetary amount is, it's still the BB of the stakes you're playing.

yeah, you should've fold pre. but once you hit your flush, you were about a 98.5% chance to win there.

You guys are just being mean. Didn't you see that they were sooooooooted?

When you have 2 suited cards you only have a 1 in 7 chance of flopping 2 of your suit. From there you only have a 1 in 3 chance of hitting your flush. Suited cards aren't that helpful.

Ok I realize now that preflop it was 62/38% to win.
After the flop my chances improved to 54/46% to win. Almost 50/50... Laughing
After the turn I was 91% to win. Now tell me here who wouldn't call an all-in bet with 91% hand ?
I had the pot odds...I also had the hand. I just look at it as totally bad luck that the other 7 had to come out on the river.
Damn river rats... Laughing

Can you explain just what make this hand so playable in a ring game but not in a SNG?

What you should be looking at is the fact that you shouldn't have played this hand in the first place.

Good question. I really can't think of one. I guess I should be looking at the fact that the hands I play in SNGs I should also stick to playing SNG type hands in ring games.

Well, no, SNG (or tournaments in general) have different strategies than ring games.

But look at it this way: with J3s, what's the best thing that can happen? You hit a flush.

Even then, you've pretty much got a start on the fourth-best flush (third-best since the A was out in this specific example).

So even when you hit, once in a while you drop a significant stack to a better flush or something crazy like this.

Are you getting odds to call preflop? It doesn't look like it, once you consider the possibility of making a flush that's no good. (Disclosure: I didn't do the math).

zinn's right on...you need to think of things in terms of bets versus the pot, certainly when you're getting going. Of course, there are other factors like a read on the opponent, implied odds, blah, blah, blah, but don't run before you walk.
