quiz question...what would you do?

Posted Fri Jun 23, 2006 5:57 pm GMT by greathuskie
you are in late stages of a tourney, very beginning of the payouts (pretty low). you get AKc on the button. blinds 100/200 you and most of the table have between 9-12,000 chips. someone in MP raises to 600, you reraise to 1500, him and 2 others call.

flop comes KK9. everyone checks to you, you bet 1/3 of the pot and get all 3 callers. turn comes 10. person in EP bets, MP raises all in, LP calls, its up to you. do you call or fold?

i was thinking about this, and being this far in a tourney it would be a tough decision. what do you do?

I probably couldn't get away from this unless all 4 cards were of the same suit...

I'm thinking a call although with three other people in the hand i wouldnt rule out someone having the straight or a boat.

First: I'd change the call option to a push option (assuming you have more in chips than MP). Next, you can be pretty sure that LP has a straight, K or maybe even a boat. MP is bluffing most of the time. EP could have could have a lot of holdings, but is probably folding here. My decision here would be entirely based on my read of LP. Without a read, I'm folding.

Your bet on the flop wasn't necessarily incorrect, but it definitely priced everyone into the hand. You should be able to let this one go-- by only betting 1/3rd the pot you also priced yourself for a potential fold if you assume you catch more than one caller here. If this situation repeats itself, the odds of catching a card that doesn't scare you with 3 callers and folding when a scare-card hits makes the 1/3rd pot-bet acceptable.

Another thing to keep into consideration is that 1 of the 2 players that're in the pot are going to be crippled/out of the tourney and it would be decent strategy to let one of them crumble without risking your stack (since there are hands that could beat you). However, if more than half your stack is already committed to the pot, you should consider whether calling is desireable (if more than half your stack is already in the pot, you'll be folding to go up a couple spots in the pay-out, and you'll be calling for the potential to dominate the table; this situation makes it more of a coin-flip decision).

I'm blahing... based on the info I have, I'd fold.

I think you blew it on the flop. The only reasonable hand you are behind at that point is 99 (yes, someone could hav K9 but they did call a preflop raise so...). If someone has that, then I go bust. I overbet the flop here with around $5k in the pot, say $6k or so and maybe even a push. No one with a K will expect you to have one, so they will come along with you and by overbetting, you make any draw pay.

Obviously, the T on the turn is a horrible card for you but I don't think you can get away from it here. I push and hope someone doesn't have a str8 or boat. If they do, then I still have a few outs.

It all depends on stack sizes, but with the MP just calling a raise and a re-raise all-in, thats scary. I probably drop the hand.

If it were anyone else Husky I would probably say push on the flop. With it being you, Mr. Badbeat...I say fold .....pre-flop.

this didnt happen to me, im just saying in this situation, would you push or fold.

Depends on chips stacks like Phil said. It also depends on how I feel. Am I feeling lucky enough to play for the boat? Do I have odds to go for the draw or did this just skew the the odds away from my favor?
