After I hit my goal of $500 from my initial $30, I felt I was playing really well. A week after that I brought it up to around $680. After that It went all down hill. It just seemed that whatever I did, I could not seem to win. I usually switch off between $10 and $20 SnG's and $25 NL and $50 NL Cash games. My bankroll went back down to $500 and I had to switch limits. I still continued my never ending loses until I hit $400.
What should I do to get my confidence back up and encourage myself again? Any advice would be much appreciated.
Kevin
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? I suggest sticking to $10 SnGs and 25NL. I might even move down to $5 SnGs to ride out the bad streak.

Stepping down stakes is a great idea.
I would suggest taking a lil break. It does wonders!!

It depends how much it has affected your confidence. What you hit seems to me the standard downswing that every poker player gets. The upswings are great, but for some reason people feel downswings are contributed by them playing bad.
I wouldn't say that's the case, it's variance. bad play starts to creep in on downswings when you are at your point, you can't win, you're trying to make things happen, you can't believe the shitty luck you are getting and so on.
What I would usually do there is take a break. I don't see how moving down limits is going to help you because you will continue to play bad if you are playing bad. What you need to do is regroup and focus.
Usually I just "ride out the storm" at the same levels.

I agree... A break is what will let you relax. At the same time, you will be thinking about playing again, at first with fear and uncertainty but you'd soon even start anticipating it and thinking of new strategies to improve your play. After that go back and check them out

Well said.
The important thing to remember is; EVERYONE gets this down-swing. It's how you handle it that counts. Some people will curl up in the corner, others will come out fighting.
When this first happened to me, i doubted my ability and i wondered what i was doing wrong. Now i except it the cards swing hot and cold. when their cold just stick in there, when there're hot-make as much as you can.
if you play enough poker, these swings in fortune will happen. As long as you don't use this down swing as an excuse, you'll pull through.
I've tried various theories from lowering my stakes, to taking a break. I can't pin-point any one thing that will make a difference.
Just remember what crack said and realise you're not alone.
Good luck

Thanks for all the advice. I can usually take streak of bad beats, but I have never experienced something so long. I didn't go on crazy tilt, but i think what contributed to the beats and cold cards was that I slowly played worst and worst as crack said. I just took a little break and read some books to get my motivation up. Fortunately things seem to be going back to normal.
Again thanks
