I've played 1 or 2 hundred tournaments online, but never a live one with more than 20 people (and only about a dozen of those--excepting that idiotic FOP thing which counts for nothing).
I'd like to try one of the local casino tourneys--$150 weekly games with 75-120 players: that would finally seem to me to be the real deal.
Anyone had experience with those?
How much would you say they are different from online tournaments--I've played mostly SNG's, but made it to #19 in one 1400 man tourney on PP.
So I'd appreciated any advice you'd be willing to share.
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

The pace is a lot slower that's for sure. You'll see some of the same stuff you see online, especially if it's a re-buy tournament. The biggest difference is when you get 4-5 hours in, it's a bit more of a phsical grind (not too huge thou) than sitting on your couch at home playing in your underwear and scratching yourself. Also, you have to be more aware of looking around to see the physical reactions of other players to see if they'll give anything away while trying not to give anything away yourself.

Well I'm mostly a casino player anyway--in fact I feel that reading opponents (live) is one of my strengths. I'm looking forward to the experience. Just could use any advice you have on the transition from online to live tournaments.
One thing I will miss a lot is knowing exactly what my opponents' stats are. You're 35 hands into a tournament and a guy raises who's seeing something like 4.5% of the flops--well that's easy to see live, too. But the difference between a 22% guy and a 36% is a lot tougher to keep track of.

One of the other online stats I missed, mindgame, was what my rank in chips was out of the remaining players. This came into play when we were down to two tables (the final table also being the money bubble). I had an OK stack, but I couldn't see the other table and had NO clue where I ranked, I could have been 6th or I could have been in 15th, which drastically affects your play to get to the FT and the money.

live tournaments typically become all in fests after the 1st hour to 2 hours.
There goal is to have the tourney done in 4 or 5 hours and get people back on the raked tables.
The exception is Caesars, those things last forever.

I don't really get that. I can see how it would certainly be the goal of the people running the tourney, but why would the players be interested in serving their purposes? So, if you're running a tournament, how do turn it into this "all-in fest?" Blind structure?? What?
And gunslinger--couldn't you just get up, stretch, and check out the other table for a second? Why not?

Yes the blind structure. I've played in MANY MANY live 'b&m' casino tournies, and the blinds cmpared to average chip stacks just gets sily. EVERYONE is under 10M ...to give you an idea.
Typical tournie I played started with 5000 in chips, and as it went from 160 total to about 75 total, blinds would be 1000-2000 and average stack was between 12k and 25k.
Add to this that unless your playing with relatively experienced players.....theres just alot of all ins in general.

I play weekly 60-70 player tournaments. They are freezeouts so there's no bingo like you'll see in re-buy tournies. Just take advantage of the fact that you can see your opponents. And like mentioned before, they do take quite some time longer then online.

I agree with the above.
I generally do "ok" in live tournaments. I say "ok" since I rarely finish in the money (something I'm working on), but usually finish in top 25%. The reason is, with 100+ players, sometimes 250+, those take forever, and maybe just lose patience and start playing border line hands...
Anyway, I suggestion I can give is bring a mp3 player or something. Listen to music, podcasts or whatever, time seems to go by faster.
Players with headphones are not all Hellmuth wannabes, and are not necessarily stupid. Cowboy hats ARE stupid though... big no-no.

No Stetsons?
So my Texas Dolly wannabe outfit stays in the trunk?

Yes. Keep your ass bearing chaps at home.

While these tournies do take a few hours, i find i'm rarely bored and the time flies by quickly..

Of course, you're a girl.
Boys like poker, and boys like girls. 1+1=2.

No kidding. Beautiful woman at the table is a MAJOR distraction. Then there's the guys falling all over themselves not to "beat her up"--you know, not betting the nuts on the end...stuff like that. It's ridiculous, disgusting, and ultimately demeaning.
I can't believe I'm guilty of it.

Mindgame-you mean like sending a beverage over to a fellow FHP'r at another table just so he can see her big fake rack?

I agree Miss_J. I played with women who thought a little clevage would win the game. Well it didn't win but it sure did cost some guys their stacks... . Never trust a woman playing poker... ...thats words to live by.
Of corse I know one Canadian cutie who wouldn't even have to play me for my chips....all she would have to do is say "Hand me your chips please."...

Oh no...I have nothing but respect for mothers. One of my favorite lines is "Mother is another name for god in the hearts and minds of children." (from The Crow).
Miss_J your mom I have great respect for...took a great woman to give us a great Lady like you...you little cutie....

To Dave B:
Who ME????
You think I would stoop to some cheap trick like that????
And come on, that was not just a "big fake rack." Give the girl her due. That was a silicon monument, and engineering wonder, a walking, talking, completely over-the-top masterpiece of erotic exaggeration.
You can't possibly tell me she wasn't distracting.
You see what you online guys are missing?

You can put fake boobs on a terd, and it is still a terd. Her face looked like she fell of a Harley a few times.
