Good play or bad?

I know my buyin is a serious issue. Buying in short does not help you to in the long wrong. But when I play like this I usually go for coinflips where I have the advange. Such as this....

Re-raise to $1.80 total and hope to get the rest in preflop or on most flops.

Didn't you read my disclaimer? I use short stack tourney tactics and have been raping these micro tables. Well...except one hand. Look in bad beats and you'll see where I got raped...stupid donks(not you guys or anyone here. Talking about the guy in my bad beat post.)... Smile

I know this type of play can be self distructing but it seems to make money if you hit and then tighten up after that.

You are five handed, if you have QQ you can never assume someone has AA or KK unless seriously convinced, and with a stack as short as yours it should be impossible to convince you of that.

As to whether or not your opponent has AK, first see above then see:

There really arent too many options you have available if you decide to play a short stack game. You've already said yourself what your goal is... get all your money in with a good hand and hope for the best. I'd overbet the pot, hope for a call then push on the flop. Unless the dreaded A and K both fall on the flop, thats your basic strategy.

...calls and prays for a set. Then when the flop 259r you check and fold to a mini bet.

All good ideas..and ways I could have played QQ but I never assume QQ is the best hand out there. Perhaps a flaw in my game but more times then not it has saved me...

So to add to this...

Jun 26 23:21:55 : abigfan called $0.50
Jun 26 23:21:57 : rav1 called $0.40

Put out a feeler bet. I like your hand but it smells like pocket kings.

Posted Tue Jun 27, 2006 12:19 pm GMT by MrDarling
Maybe its only me, but I can't really see a couple of K's here.
I would probably slow play it , maybe check raise , and see what the reaction to this is. if it follows another raise , I'll hate it , and hope I could fold Smile

How can you call pocket kings when theres been no betting after the flop?

You're good the majority of the time here, and since you have a short stack, you pretty much are going to go all in by the end of the hand. You dont have enough money to make any other decision. Feeler bets do nothing here, what you want to do is put in a small enough bet that he'll call, but something large enough that when you go all in on the turn hes getting a big enough pot to call you down. This is actually where having a short stack helps you, since he faces no further bets on the river, if he thinks he might be ahead, plus has a chance to improve, he is much more likely to call and double you up.

If you bet out and he raises you all in, you call. No other decision. And thats why you don't play short stacked.

Hero?

I knew where I stood right here. No way did I really expect anyone to have KK. I checked because I wanted to see how anyone else would react to this flop. Sort of a pre-trap move. Little did I suspect this numb nut making a move like this and then to be followed by the other numb nut. I had to see what the heck these boys thought they had that was so darn good but I also knew this was possibly the best time to PUSH and get paid.

I was not affraid of a flush for sure at this point. I was a little affraid that someone might hit a straight but thought push or fold because with this hand there is no call. I also thought both these guys would lay it down or one would call and the other would muck. Was I wrong...

Normally after I build up a nice amount then I slow down and play good solid conservative poker. Using this type of strategy has allowed me to cash twice in the last month. Both times for $150 and I usually leave about $25 in my account to build back up. Most of my wins have been in the $0.10/$0.20 tables. I ducked back to this level after a bad beat.

That's a good time to go all in, right there. You'll get at least 1 caller. I wouldn't worry about KK. AJ, maybe JTsuited or something with a K are possible holdings for opponents... all the more reason to push. I wouldn't call... I don't think calling has any long-term advatages over pushing. To be honest, in this position you don't want to give yourself any reason to fold, and that's the only "advantage" to calling in this spot, imo. Just push and let the odds work for you.

Sorry Tadz...I added the ending while you were posting. Basically thats what I did. I checked because I wanted to go ahead and get as much money as I could in case one or both laid it down. I was wildly happy to see both callers here and even more excited when the turn was crappy and the river gave me quads.

I knew I smelt two kings. It's a good thing they didn't both belong to one guy.
