Trying a new game

Posted Wed Jun 28, 2006 9:57 pm GMT by LeafsFan1122
On Friday night, I'm going to a 3/6 FLHE game at a place about 40 min from my house. This is significant because it's going to be my biggest cash game up to date. I'm bringing 200$.

I'm excited about playing because a game like this doesn't come around often for me, but the problem is that the game will be FL. I'm comfortable with my NL and even PL games but stopped playing FL frequently around 5 months ago (and that was SH FL).

Basically I'm just looking for a few pointers. The players are most likley going to be average-decent, and I'm guessing it will be a loose game.

Any advice would be helpful, and then after Friday night i'll post some results.

Thanks, i'll make you guys proud. 8)

Remember one thing. At these limits, it will most likely be a loose game, therefore a chasing game. People chases a lot. The important thing is to know when you're beat. That will save you a few big bets.

Here's an exemple on how it can be wild.

Never ever slow play, unless you flop a monster.

What else...

Oh yeah, as usual, reads on players are EXTREMELY important.

Meh, you're a good player, I'm sure you'll do well.

Good for you. I hope it goes well.

I guess my main point would be play very conservatively in EP. I know that I tend to limp a lot with marginal hands upfront in NL due to the high implied odds, but this is rarely a correct play in Limit. So, fold your small pairs and the lower end of your suited connectors in EP.

Also, don't bluff in this game until and unless you have seen players capable of laying down bottom and middle pair. Again, in NL since you can manage the pot size, you can do this effectively. In limit (especially a game like 2/4), people will call you with very marginal hands if the pot is big enough.

Finally, when in doubt just fold. It sounds like you are a little nervous about the stakes, so fold more than you otherwise would/perhaps should until you hit your comfort zone with the players at the table.

Good luck,

Shorn

Play good hands aggressively and use position to isolate and dominate--average player has no idea how important position is.

Do not bluff. As mentioned above it's typically a waste of money. You CAN bluff a good player. You can NOT bluff a bad one. Forget it.

DO semi-bluff. This will get you plenty of action when you really want it.

Always compliment bad players. Somebody hits his quads on the river when you've got the higher boat and he's paid every raise to see it--don't tell him that only an idiot pays four bets on the turn to hit a 43-1 shot. Tell him he's a genius.

If you want to be invited back, do not appear too serious and do not win too much.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I really do appreciate it.

Well, i'll be going there later tonight and really can't wait. Been practicing some FL on Stars and just hoping for the best later.

The reason this is so big to me is because I'm young. Games like this don't come around often.

Thanks again and I'll update later with details.

You going to one of the casinos or just a home game? I think sarnia is the only one that offers 3/6 so im assuming home game. Play tight, but really jam pots where you have the best of it. Don't be intimidated and don't tilt if things go badly early.

Good Luck.

Ladies and gents, I am back.

I just played a 4 hour session of 3/6 FL with a kill, at a table of close personal friends of Daniel Negreanu. Needless to say, the calibur was great, and I was very nervous upon walking in the door.

I get in, to be introduced to a table of 6-7 players. They look at me and I obviously know that they are thinking in their heads "easy money" as I, the 16 year old go to take my seat. I sit in with 120$, and to my surprise, there is a hired dealer that will deal for us. That was quite exciting, as I've never had that before.

She gives me my chips, and after a few hands go by, I get to finally play because the dealer button passes me. I look down at my very first hand. Pocket Aces. Few folds, few limps, I raise. The players look around and snicker. Flop is rags, and we're 3 handed. They check to bet and I bet out. One of the players (the host) makes a joke, "wtf is this, kid?" I smile at him and he calls me down until the river. I take a 50$ pot on my first hand.

I'm starting to get more comfortable with the players, the atmosphere, and the game itself. We're playing on a very nice poker table, with very nice chips. I'm playing tight-agressive, picking up a few pots here, losing a few pots there, etc. The host (whom is actually a very good player) makes playful comments throughout the hands that whenever I raise a pot, he folds, because I'm probably raising aces or kings.

Later on in the session, when everyone is fully comfortable with me, and vise versa I pick up aces again. SCORE! Before this I had been on a dry spell and folding plenty of hands. I raise it up PF, and manage to get heads up with the host! Flop comes 7 xx, and we're betting, raising a bit, but long story short, he hit his set of 7s on the flop, and I lose a $60-ish hand.

Bunch more hands go by, I'm sitting there with around 95$ and I pick up TT UTG. I raise it up and get into a hand with 2 other players, the button and BB. Flop is 59T. YES! I bet, button folds, BB calls. Turn is a Q. He checks, I bet, he checkraises. Uh oh. I raise him one more time to see where I am, he calls. River is x, he checks, I check.

He had QQ. It was a relatively big hand, and I lost a whole bunch of chips. I'm now down to aruond 50$, and ouch that's quite a bit of money to be lost in one game for me.

A dry spell of cards begins, and my stack widdles down. In the mean time though I should mention that I've loosened up my game and took some decent pots of bluffs, but the table doesn't know that.

I get down to around 35$, and opt to buyin for 80$ more to give me some better playing room, which makes my total buy in 200$. From that point on, I grind it out, and get up to around 160$. I'm dealt QK on the button, and a few players before me have limped, so I do the same. Now here, I forget the details and specifics of the hand but this is a summerization. Flop brings nothing, all small cards and it ends up getting checked to me, so I check too. Turn brings a scare card and first to act bets. "Host" calls, and one other guy too. It gets to me, and I practically have nothing but I raise. The table laughs, and the host and other player lay their hands down to me, and I show the bluff. They say nice hand and I'm back up to 200$ on the dot.

This is how it ended. I decided to get up, as I was getting tired and it had already been four hours. Of course I left out many many hands that were notable, but I just couldn't remember them all. I left the table, cashed out my money, shook the players hands, and they invited me back next week.

This was my first "real" live cash session, and I enjoyed it far beyond what I thought I would. The players were great people, and made the game fun. Stories they would tell about DN weren't too shabby either.

Basically. I had an amazing time, and never thought I could be so happy about breaking even. I'm going back next Friday and can hardly wait. Tonight gave me a whole new depiction of what "live poker" is really about, and not just the typical style I'm limited to in home games (which don't get me wrong, they are great too). Various aspects of tonights game further demonstrated the difference between online and live poker.

It's now almost 3am. Goodnight, and if i can remember any left out details, i'll post them tommorow.

Thanks for reading.

**EDIT**

About half way through the game, I finally understood that it's customary to tip the dealer after winning a big hand so "technically" I did win some because I must have tipped her atleast 7-8$.

Who f*ck' cares they're friends of Negreanu. They can be friends with the Pope if they want, I'm here to play my game and nothing less.

The most important thing is to have fun, and looks like you did. Great job!!
