Anyone ever surprised they won?

Posted Tue Jul 04, 2006 1:09 pm GMT by zeroswarm
Played a hand which went all the way to a showdown and reluctantly called the last bet knowing I had lost, only to be surprised to see all the chips sliding over in my direction..... Shocked
Is anyone else ever completely surprised when they win a hand after convincing themselves they had lost?

Yes! I was playing in a home game once and I limped in on the button with 87s. Flop came something like J-4-10. Everyone checks around. Turn is something like a 5. Everyone checks to this player to my left who bets the minimum, so i raise since i think she is bluffing. She calls. River is a 5 I believe. She bets out again and I raise. She calls. Whoops!

Me- "I think you have me"
Her- "I don't think so"

She flips over 2-3 offsuit. I won the pot with 8 high Shocked

That is the most shocked I have ever been.

In this tournament at my dad golf club filled with complete fishes (most did not know the rules and would show their cards to others during hte hand to ask for advice showing everyone what they had) a guy kept on trying to bluff me out of a pot when somebody was already all-in, and were near the bubble. This guy kept on bluffing, but I thought he had to have something. Good thing that at the end I called his all-in with second top pair to have him out kicked. I would have folded, but I would have few chips left, and I have seen people call all-ins wiht jack high after the flop.

yeah, once online in a Fixed limit game.. i had AK in position and i raised it preflop. got like 5 callers along in the hand... everyone checked so i stabbed at each street, thinned the field to 2 opponents left on the river where i took another stab and got called by one, thats when i figured i was beat, but the player mucked his cards and i won with A-K high!

I once bet 22 on a KQ8XX board got called and was fairly certain I'd win.

Apart from that lone occasion I get surprised alot of the time on the river.

I made a huge laydown once when I had a 56s on a QJ246 board and I was offered truly amazing odds. I won't make that mistake again.

I have it happen once or twice a week. Usually I'm on a draw, don't make it on the flop, and all of a sudden the big better checks and I've won with a stupidly low high card.

The problem is that a couple of those hands can tempt you to call down if there is any reason to suspect that your opponent is bluffing or continuation betting an AK that didn't hit. I've lost more than I've won in these circumstances.

I once bluffed with A high only to be called by K high.

Best part, the explanation the player gave was, "I wanted to expose you for the liar you are." Laughing

I was donking it up but what the hell could he have had to call and lose?

Am I the only one that can not believe that she called? I mean she had the absolute worst hand possible after the river and a call from here results in a 99.9% chance of losing (unless you tie for the worst hand). Calling at the river while playing the board in that situation makes zero sense.

The one that usually gets me is when 2 ppl are all-in preflop, something like AJ vs QQ....and the AJ rivers a wheel......or worse yet, when two ppl have the same pp, like KK vs KK, and somebody rivers a flush...that hurts...
