Hi all ,
I'm wondering how to play a top pair low kicker or for that matter a middle or low pair with top kicker?
Lets say its a tournament , blinds are 50-100 , you all got around 2000 chips.
Your on BB , 6 player limps in you check with 310o .
flop comes
2c 6d 10h .
You're first to act.
how do you play it?
Pot is 600. So I think I need to bet 400-500 (a quarter of my chips, by now)
Everybody fold but one. who calls.
turns come 8d .
Now what?
This is something I usually lose a lot of money with?
If I continue to bet my chip stack is getting shorter and I still have no idea if I have a good hand or not. If I just check, villain will simply bet me out of the pot.
I need help guys.
Danny

I quite often find these tricky as well. Just because you have top pair with a low kicker doesn't mean it's not the best hand. The main thing I'd worry about would be that it has a pocket pair that is 10 or higher, or has picked up a set on the flop. He could have something like 9 8 or 5 4, meaning he has a straight draw.
It would also depend on whether you have any kind of read on this guy. If it's someone who tends to be aggressive and bluff a lot then I'd be tempted to push all my chips in as at least he won't be able to bluff you off top pair. If he has a straight draw then he can't realistically call you.
If you don't have any kind of read on the guy then I'd probably just check, and if he bets assume he has top pair with better kicker or a higher pocket pair and fold.
Not saying any of this is correct, just my thoughts

Against 6 players, you're probably behind here, and even if you are ahead, you'll still be caught a decent part of the time.
I hate leading at this pot OOP. Check the flop. If a bet comes from EP, you can fold. If it comes late, you can try a checkraise. If it checks around, you can lead the turn on something not scary.
Generally, I'm looking for an excuse to fold this hand, not a way to win a pot.

I'm with Sean. I'll probably take a stab at taking it down on the flop, if met with a call I'm ready to c/f the turn. If met with a raise, I can't find the fold button fast enough.

6 players I am going to say that my hand is not good enough here most of the time by the river.
You need to take a stab at it, but you are first to act and have no way of knowing how the flop has hit the others. The likelhood is it has.
If there were less players then I will probably take a stab at the pot depending on players on the flop. If not I would check and see what other players do. A potsize and 1/2 pot size on turn is going to commit you, you want to try and be commited with your better hands, not marginals.
Playing these hands so strongly with only 20 big blinds and many limpers is asking for trouble IMO.

I'm with the general opinion of others here. Like Sean said you almost want to look for a reason to fold.

yeah, yer prolly behind....keep in mind tho, 6 limpers is a buttload....now, if 4 ppl saw the flop, which is more likely, then things are much harder...i would think that in this situation yer gonna be up against middle pair top kicker, or some sort of draw....frequently somebody will have top pair better kicker, and rarely somebody will fish you in w/ their low set...
i would think that most of the time tho, you should be able to take down the pot w/ 4 ppl....just watch out for ppl hitting their draws or showing a lot of unexpected strength
