Hello all,
I am kind of new to this site. I really like it so far; it seems to have more educated players than some of the other forums. Anyway, I am a college student trying to learn everything I can about the game. I don't think I will ever stop learning. I have around 16 poker books I re-read constantly, I keep detailed records of every game I play, and I have been playing for 3 years now. I am now searching the internet for blogs and forums to help improve my game. This is a weird question, but my friends and I have been taking trips out to the Imperial Palace in Biloxi. It's 4 hours away but it's the only place we can get live NL action. We have been twice now and the trips have been pretty good to us. We basically went to play the 1-2 NL tables. 100 to 200 dollar buy in.
I am really wondering if anyone has any experience in playing these games. I am guessing anyone that has played in a casino has probably started around these limits if NL is your game. Does anyone here make money constantly playing these limits? I have heard people refer to these limits as tourist limits? I am pretty confident that the mixture of tourists and people that are looking for tourists are fairly balanced. I would say that 65% to 75% of players that have a handle on the game. Wouldn’t you think this would be ideal for making a pretty good chuck of money?
Our idea is to take trips out to Biloxi twice a month. Bring about a $1000 each time and build up a bankroll and see where it takes us. We are just regular college kids, not rich or anything. This seems like the best plan for us to prove ourselves to the poker community and really it seems like our only way into building up into higher limits. Any feed back from anyone who might play/played this game successfully would be awesome.
Sorry this is so long, but I just want you guys to understand where we are coming from. I have a $50 buy-in 50c/$1 NL-game every Sunday and we have a $20 buy-in 25c/50c every Wednesday. It's pretty hard to find big games in Tallahassee, FL. =( This seems like our way out. If we can go to Biloxi and consistently make the trip profitable we are thinking about going every weekend. Any advice would be great.
Thanks guys,
Chris
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

In response to your post, it sounds like to me that you are going to be all playing with the same bankroll? I can't advise more against this because of both personal experience and how i've seen it work with other close friends. Apart from that, realize it is still gambling so expecting to win every single session is somewhat unreasonable (if lady luck doesn't smile on you that night theres nothing you can do about it). However, winning consistently is reasonable to expect. All this aside, it sounds like a good plan. Good luck with it.

I didn't mean for it to sound like we were "sharing" the same bankroll. We are each going to have around $1000 stacks. I am really just wondering if anyone have been successfull playing this type of game over a long period of time. Has anyone had any real experience playing poker for a living?? Ultimately I am wondering if we could move to Biloxi over the summer for maybe a 2 month period and really give it a try. Of course we would need some more money, but it seems like our closest chance of seeing what playing professional poker is like. No other job, just cards; all night long for 2 months. If we go broke then we come back home. To make it sound good, we are just calling it a summer trip =)

Seems like it can take a big toll on your friendships, will be hard on you guys when some do well while others struggle. Might take away the fun away, even if your are winning if some of your friends are losing a lot of money.

If you did plan a 2 month trip like this i would figure out how much each of you were willing to lose each night before you got up. Lets say for your case its $300 ($150 buy-in + one re-buy). I would multiply this number by 10 at least. I'm not sure about NL cash games but for limit it is entirely possible to go through a huge losing streak. That sort of thing happened to me. Between december 2005 and May 2006 I played poker most every night and managed to live off of it. At the end of may i hit a massive downswing... far worse than one i had ever experienced before. Before that point, I had never had more than 4 losing sessions in a row. I had 14 losing sessions in a row with 2 small wins mixed in. I don't consider myself a donk. Generally, I'm one of the tighest players at the table. Just be prepared for a really long, bad streak. If lady luck takes a dump on your face theres nothing you can do about that. Good luck in whatever you decide to do
